    By Tom Krasovic4 A.M.APRIL 17, 2013

There wasn't a secret Utah handshake Tuesday between two Utes, Mike McCoy and Eric Weddle.

But McCoy, heading out of the Chargers media trailer, slapped the safety on the back and bellowed, "Fine institution, Utah here."

To us media dopes, McCoy comes off as someone brimming with energy and certitude; to hear his Utah chum, he's also that way around his players.

"He comes off very headstrong, very confident, knows what he wants--and we're here to win a championship," Weddle said on Tuesday.

So the new ball coach does seem to get the big picture, even if this is his first job as the top boss. There's a silver football handed out every February. The Chargers lack one. The objective is to get one, and McCoy needs to make sure his players believe they can. Or else why bother?

"We’re not here just to be .500," Weddle said. "We’re not here to maybe win the AFC West here and there. We want to win a Super Bowl. Just his belief, it rubs off on us."

Norv Turner won two Super Bowls as the Cowboys playcaller, and sometimes wore Super Bowl bling at Chargers Park. Not getting to a Super Bowl in his six seasons here cost him the job. On the day the Chargers fired him and he said goodbye to the players, Norv wore one of the giant diamond rings.

Other familiar faces are gone. From the defense alone: Takeo Spikes, Antwan Barnes, Vaughn Martin, Antoine Cason, Ataria Bigby and Antonio Garay.

Weddle noticed. "Once the season ended," he said, "and you see guys let go, you get down a little bit, and you just don’t know what the team’s going to be like."

McCoy arrived from Denver, where the Broncos had gone 13-4, and began to work on the team's psyche. Prepping, he ordered new practice fields, new paint colors, even new lightbulbs at Chargers Park. The message was obvious: Out with the stale past, in with fresh present. The media wizards are still around, though, and we'll ask a pesky question, some of them rooted in the team's decline of 2010-12.

Chargers players, when asked about the past, either change the subject or deal with it fast.

    Momentum begins between the ears.

"Now, shoot, I feel like we’re the best team in the league," Weddle said. "And a lot of that is because of coach McCoy and the way he presents himself – the way he portrays what he wants. A lot of what you are as a team is attitude, and you can control that.

"I’m just excited," Weddle said. "It’s a new year, a new belief. Until the season ends, I think we’re going to be the best."

Probably didn't mean it literally, just caught up in saying he thought he had a good group of guys and liked the make-up of this new team.

Hmm, interesting. I know that was literally the first day, but looks like,

    LOT: King Dunlap
    LOG: Steve Schilling/Chad Rinehart
    C: Nick Hardwick
    ROG: Chad Rinehart/Steve Schilling
    ROT: Jeromey Clary

I can't make out the ROG.

I guess it's nice to see a captain on the team screaming confidence then the milktoast BS I saw for a few years with Norv, even when they were one of the best teams in the league. And it was said better than bleepin Ryan Mathews

People read into this **** way too much. He wasn't saying it literally - he was saying it in the sense that after meeting and working with McCoy he was PUMPED and that he bought what he was saying 110%.

Yeah I wouldn't say its more or less ridiculous than the people who still say Norv is a good offensive coordinator, or like last year go out on a limb to defend the guy to ownership.

Players are supposed to feel this way, especially on day 1.

So far I am liking the hire of MM and I am excited to see the changes he's bringing.

Watched the TT and MM pressers last nite. Even though MM is giving zero away (talk about playing your cards close to your chest, the guy should be a politician) I love his directness. He will be black or white to the players no wishy washy grey. If you ain't good enough you're not gona make it. Interesting that TT refused to be drawn on the Gaither thing. I guess Gaither got a chance showed no respect and was gone before he could say 'Excuse me'. I know it's probably a PR thing now but it's good to see TT talking, I don't need to hear from him weekly or anything like that but more than once every 2 years is good.

Hmmmmmm, not sure how peeps can read into this anything other than what is written in simple Black & White ?

There's only 2 words in the entire statement that have more than one syllable afterall.

He thinks we'll be the best, or am I missing a sublimal message or something written in invisible ink maybe ?

Would it be preferable for him to have said that the team is a bunch of complacent hacks who could barely start in the Arena Football League?

Tough to see who they are but I'd bet 99% of our plays are going to look something like this, using Phillips as that 6th O line man. Rivers (obviously) Mathews, Gates, DX, and Floyd in most formations.

I think at this point it's just a given that Novak will pee in the pool. They're chief concern now is making sure he doesn't crap as well. :D

As I recall, the quote came from his response to a question about his thoughts on McCoy - if it's not linked in the article it's def posted on the chargers.com site. Fun presser to listen to :)

It gives me hope that every time I've seen Weddle, Hardwick or Rivers talk about McCoy they get so excited :inlove:
