I can't say that I feel too badly about Weddle doing this. Granted, he looks bad back there, but this is his 2nd week with this job, after not doing it since 2007. Really, this is a luck/management issue, because we fired Spurlock and kept Goodman.

I actually really dislike the idea of him returning kicks or punts anyway.

Don't see the point in putting one of your most valuable players back there to take unnecessary hits and risk injury when he's the only great player in our secondary and arguably our best defensive player.

I don't blame Weddle. I blame the guy who put him back there to return the punts.

After the performance of Tutu and Alexander last night, I think that Meachem or Royal may be perfect for punt return duty moving forward.

right, which was on Sunday vs the browns. did Royal fill in the rest of that game or did Weddle take over right away? Pretty sure Weddle was doing some returning in that game. but I could be wrong

Royal is hurt or else we'd be seeing him as pr. He's way way way better than Weddle at it.

Are you missing the distinction between kick returns and punt returns?

yeah, I know he's hurt. my point was that since having Weddle return is not Ideal and Alexander and Tutu performed better in one game that Meacham and Royal have all season so far, Have them return the punts instead of playing WR becuase they seem to suck at WR. Royal is on IR as well so we won't see him again this year. It was meant as a general statement to imply their suckyness and suggest a role where they might be useful.

He didn't muff the punt. He fumbled it. If anything just tell him to call fair catch every time so he doesn't get hurt. Because if Weddle goes down this Defense is really gonna have problems in the secondary.

Exactly, the D can not afford to lose him, so I have to question why they are putting him out there to begin with.

To be honest, it's not like he's that good of a returner that it's worth risking him either.

To be fair, despite the call that was "confirmed" on the field, it wasn't a "according to Hoyle" fumble. The ground can't cause a fumble. There was no strip even attempted. The only thing to contact Weddle to dislodge the ball was the ground. Sorry, ref, but you blew that sucker.

100% spot on. He is the best player on defense. His versatility in blitz packages, his ability to penetrate gaps in run defense and his alertness as a good pass defender make him the most valuable defensive player even over Phillips. He Cason and Jammer owe their jobs to him.

weddle happens to be my favorite player, his ability and versatility are outstanding, he is hands down our best D player in my opinion. i do how ever think he has no business out there doing punt returns. as mentioned it's an unecessary risk to a star player that si needed else where. even though he did mees up a couple of the catches he did a decent job considering he hasn't done it in abotu 5 years, but it defeinetely isn't his place. i never cared for goodman, he left alot to be desired in his returns as well, i cna only think of a couple times when i actually saw him make a return where i said "he did good on that one." once royal is healthy that will be his spot, in one of the articles i read he even expressed interest in the job and said he likes returning kicks, so hopefully we see him back soon....

Cason should be returning punts now that he has a healthy backup.

Norv (or Bisaccia) allowed Crayton to return punts last year. As bad an idea as that one was (because the guy couldn't get out of his own way let alone break loose for positive yardage)... allowing Weddle to return punts is downright stupid.

If they're looking for yardage on punt returns... put Cason back there. At least if he gets hurt we'll be better off at CB. :casonsucks:

I dont get why Cason isnt back their when given a chance he has actually looked pretty solid returning punts... If not even gilchrist has done it in college but im pretty sure weddle has no business being back there

Where did you get that Royal was on IR? He is listed as Questionable this coming week, something that isn't possible for a guy on IR

Cason should be returning punts and not playing corner. Gilchrist should be tried as a kick returner.

Keep Weddle the hell out of the return business IMO to much at risk!
