    One of the articles was from the New York Post. The others I have just read from various sources. Apparently, I am not the only one who thinks a promotion to Assistant Head coach qualifies. For that matter, assistant GM qualifies as well as GM.

    If indeed a head coach were dying or sick, I could see litigation over the fact an assistant was hired to take over as head coach eventually. To me this is common sense and in the spirit of the rule against pillaging.

    I wrote that same thing elsewhere ..... We really could use Manusky right now, but that would mean Marty would still be letting us all know that he was an English major.

    I hope our next coach majored in anything but English. :lol:

    BTW, I was going to ask you to stop copying my takes from here and pasting them on other forums, claiming them as your own. Not cool. :tdown:

    Anyone find any holes in this argument?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Two Super Bowl winning coaches ........
    Was John Madden ever a coordinator at the NFL level? Answer, no. He was a head coach of this major institution - Hancock Junior College....
    Madden was the Raiders LB coach prior to becoming head coach.
    Was Ditka a coordinator before he left Dallas to become the Bears HC in 1982?
    Nope.
    ~~~~~~~~~

    I still am undecided on Singletary/Ryan. Just tossing out some precedence for other HC's without coordinator experience.

    Ditka had Buddy Ryan. The Bears would have done nothing without him.

    The Bears were also 6-10 and had just fired some clown named Neil Armstrong. Like I said before, I'd be more amenable to take a leap of faith on a guy like Singletary if we were the dregs of the NFL. But not as a Super Bowl contender.

    As for Madden, he coached with the Raiders for two years, and Al Davis had his eye on him for years before that. If Singletary had been on our staff for even one year, I'd feel better about him.

    That said, Singletary is still in my top four:

    Rex Ryan (by a WIDE margin) :lol:
    Ron Rivera
    Jim Mora Jr
    Mike "I am good behind a podium and I wore a yellow jacket" Singletary

    Here's the question, you gave two beautiful working examples. How many examples have NOT worked?

    I don't know. Who has been hired as a head coach that didn't have any NFL coordinator experience?

    I don't mean guys who were HC's from major college programs, but guys who were plucked from NFL staffs as assistants.

    Link

    I don't think Madden ever coached at Cal Poly, but he did graduate from there, and while working on his Masters he spent time as a football assistant coach at a SLO, CA high school. He then went to Hancock Jr. College as an assistant.

    on a less serious note, how bout madden for hc? or someone who can just stand there and take heat from the press while the real brains of the organization calls the shots...like a political system maybe? bc the media hurt this team last year, seriously.

    I think he was a graduate asst. coach or something like that during the year when the team plane crashed and killed his former teammates. That's why he won't fly.

    At least, that's how I remember the story. One of my former JC head coaches played under Coryell/Madden at San Diego State. He told us a story about why Madden refuses to fly... and I recall him saying that he was a coach at the time of the accident.

    From that link I cited above:

    That's about the most complete article on Madden's career I can find. The only coaching he did at Cal Poly was coaching an alumni game.

    Well... there ya' have it. Coach told me the story about 15yrs ago, so I guess over time I just remember it as him being an asst. coach at Cal Poly at the time.

    Oh well. Good find.

    well he is a San Diegan at heart i think. thats where he got his first real coaching break so it would be fitting if he ended it there too.

    but seriously dean should hire someone from within. aka my boy James.

    rex is more of a coordinator coach whereas singletary is a coaches coach. there is somewhat of a double value in rex but singletary has better pure coaching attributes. all depends on what AJ wants.
