Lots of talk by Ikeman & Matilack on how the Chargers should lose or forfeit their remaning games. Should they?
How in hell can a player, play to lose a game when their very paycheck can be affected by performance?????
Stupid thread. Ike is saying we don't benefit from winning, and I agree, and thats where it ends...at least for me.
Talk about losing on purpose if just fan pablum spewage. Too much money involved, to much pride involved for a team to lose on purpose. Not to mention that team would lose 80% of their fans for quitting in that manner...
how come those teams that are always in the Super Bowl and always draft late in the rounds, why is it they always come up with good draft choices LATE in the round?
I did not know you could forfeit an NFL game? Hell they made the Chiefs play after the suicide then the Cowboys had to play after the drunk killed Jerry Brown.
What does it matter in ickman says we should lose? He is entitled to his opinnion, no matter how short sighted and silly it might be. Is it worth arguing about? IF the team starts losing on purpose we will have tons to argue about.
I'm not sure if you can either. But Ikeman said that should've been an option for the chargers after they lost to Baltimore.
He's not alone in his thinking. This "lose to win" mentality is all over. Pretty valid question for the fans. Do you want your team to fight to win, even when it seems "meaningless" or do you think a higher draft position is worth losing games?
Well thats something else entirely, forfeiting is bullshit. I'm just kind of hoping we play hard and unfortunately get tagged with a flukish loss due to a muffed punt or a blocked FG. I do agree though that winning only diminishes our leverage in the draft...and serves no other purpose than a quick "fix" for our egos.
That's the point of the question Conc. It's a stupid suggestion. So why are so many fans behind the "lose to win" mentality? If they don't actually want their team to forfeit/throw games, they just want them to suck? So they can jump up a few spots with no guarantee their pick is any better? Either way you slice it, that's pretty sad.
I dont know that a lot of fans are behind it. I imagine there are some who think themselves the next Lombardi because they make the suggestion, but it is just a suggestion that is born of the Madden NFL and Fantasy Football mentality. I also disagee as strongly as I can with you that this is a valid question in any way.
I thought only T-ball games, little league and crooked colleges had forfeits? Come to think of it, isn't it the intention of both teams that take the field for a game that they are there to win? I do not think that in the history of the game (modern era, AFL/NFL merger) that any team ever took to the field with the intention of losing just so they could have a better draft pick in the Spring. Whoever has that notion is just plain stupid.
I want the Chargers to win every game. I think what many are thinking/feeling, it just doesn’t sting as much when they lose now…the silver lining is a better draft pick. So yes I want to win and I want a team that fights every time they are on the field. But now that we are out of the hunt, I don’t get frustrated anymore by a loss. Disappointed yes, frustrated no.
Always always always play to win. You tell an athlete that you're throwing the game, or you give them any inkling that you're throwing the game, you've lost them forever. That would be a very poor move if Spanos were to try it.
Exactly. I don't get how so many are confused and/or upset by Ikeman's position. It's pure logic. Spock fans get it, but I guess the Captain Kirks ain't buying it. For me it's simple. I always root for my team to win when I go to a game or watch on TV. I enjoy the game, cheer them on, and celebrate a victory.... but... I realize that the best outcome for the team's future at this point, is a loss.
No, I said that it would've been in their best interests to forfeit. Also, I never said that it's "always" better to lose.
If winning out gives Norv a chance to keep his job, then I'm sorry, I love this team, but the price of those wins is too high. Like some people have said above, sometimes you have to lose a little battle in order to win the war.
Actually, CBF, I thought it was very sweet of you to deliberately misspell both posters' handles... in a gentle effort to minimize the embarrassment of a "fan" holding such a silly position. (At first, I thought "Ikeaman" referred to that guy on my block who ain't quite right, but really enjoys assembling low end furniture)
