Depends on what happens in the playoffs imo. If it's an 8-8 year and a choke job in the playoffs, meh. Time to move on both @ GM and HC.

Beating the Steelers in Pittsburgh for the 1st time in franchise history (during the regular season) feels pretty good, and I don’t care if it costs us a few slots in the draft come next April.

This is the equivalent of Cam Newton doing his Superman pose after getting a TD in the 4th quarter when his team is down 40 points.

It would be equivalent if it was the FIRST time Cam did a Superman pose. Alas, another failed lesson in comparisons. Although, you could argue that a Charger win equals a Panther loss. I'd like to see how that argument will play out in a couple of weeks. Maybe they'll play to a tie.;)

Celebrating a 1-14 record in someone else's house is pretty analogous to me.
Celebrating a 5-8 record is pretty analogous to me.

I can almost remember every loss by the Chargers in Pittsburgh. To be able to celebrate a victory was a very joyous occasion. Not like the time I left Pittsburgh dodging beer bottles, spit, 500 middle fingers and one mad bartender at the Airport! So I will take those victorys every chance I get!

I'm done responding to your posts on this subject. You neither understand my position, nor do you make any attempts to do so, in spite of very clear explanations on my part. If you can't even be troubled to understand the basis of the assertion, there's no point in continuing to discuss its merits with you.

You play to win acquire slightly better draft position, in hope that it results in a marginally superior draft pick
in the hope that that might translate into a slightly better roster in the future so that your team might…uh, win.”

(guaranteed losses for unguaranteed possible future wins? That's an irrational crapshoot I can believe in)

    Bolded = End of debate.

I am of the opinion that it would be best to forgo any "feel good" from meaningless wins this season to gain that advantage. You seem to hold the opinion that said advantage is not worth much.

Let's agree to disagree and move on. Live long and prosper my friend.

To clarify, as I stated earlier in this thread. I always root for my team to win when I go to a game or watch on TV. I enjoy the game, cheer them on, and celebrate a victory.... but... I realize that the best outcome for the team's future at this point, is a loss.

Bolded = the only aspect on which we disagree. I can live with that. Moving on.

If AJ's gonna stick around, we may as well win--there's no cost to slipping down a few picks.

    If the options where:

    A) the Chargers go 8-8, don't make the playoffs, but Norv & AJ are retained
    B) the Chargers go 7-9 (losing to the Panthers but beating the hated jets and raiders) Norv & AJ are fired, but the team loses out on Joeckel and Lewan (but draft Jake Matthews)
    C) the Chargers go 5-11, get a top 5 pick and draft Joeckel

I'd take B :( , but still would watch the game to punish myself

    Can I change my vote?!?

At first I thought IkeaMan & Matlock were crazy...but now I've done some research
about the "lose to win" ("'Nigerian' rhymes with 'win'") methodology, and it makes a lot of sense:
To be the unstoppable juggernaut that they now are,
the Detroit Lions only had to be horribly unwatchable and a curse on their
fans for the decade 2001 to 2010. Winning 39, but slyly stockpiling 121 losses,
the Lions sandbagged their way to Draft Heaven. Dumb?
Only if one doesn't know that the Lions are currently rocking the NFC North
with a 4-9 record and only 3 teams in front of them in the division.
I won't doubt "lose to win" again.
C'mon Chargers! It's to your advantage to looooooooose...

As long as Norv and AJ get fired then there would be at least one "positive" from this season of embarrassment.

But if the Chargers do what they typically do under Norv Turner...win when it doesn't matter...and Dean once again "sees" something he likes and retains them (AJ & Turner), then it is just another wasted season with another one on the way.

Debating the value of high draft picks is all subjective.

    2 words. Matt Millen.

After replacing him, and drafting better players, they've had a much better team. Sadly, their horribleness also came prior to the rookie salary cap. Their 10 win playoff season, in a year the Packers went 15-1, the Saints went 13-3, and the Giants went 13-3, was a quality accomplishment. Stafford threw for 5200+ yards, and prior to being a moron and accepting the Madden Cover, Megatron was amazing. I don't know what happened to Suh, but that team was on fire last year.

Megatron is still amazing this season and leads the league in receiving yards. Problem with Detroit now is they can't keep their off the field issues in check.

It's called outside of the division (and Frisco) they played a cake schedule last year in terms of matchups. They beat some average-at-best and poor teams, they ran up yards and points through the air on some really terrible secondaries (Dallas, Carolina, mostly-pre-Tebow Denver, Tampa, Oakland, us). And when they faced legitimate teams with remotely legitimate defenses they failed to notch 20 PPG or better.

Schedule benefits a lot of teams like this, take for example the Colts this year (and the Bengals last year), they actually have a negative point differential and yet they're in the driver's seat for a WC playoff spot right now. That's insane! But they've managed to eek out close wins against mediocre and bad teams and then subsequently gotten blown out by any truly good team on their schedule.

I get it now! So now your point is that a GM can undermine the brilliant
"lose to win" strategy...turning sure losses into an uncertain future.
Wait! I thought that was my point!!

(you aren't arguing, obviously, that Millen was the only guy (or even close) out there not maximizing his crap-gotten picks)

I think this. And there are already enuff teams with fans that get this mentality, we dont have to add to the pot.

Herm Edwards is now claiming that Steven Crowder edited the videotape of his seminal quote!!
(the part Edwards says Crowder clipped is in gray)

"You play to have your opponent win the game!!"

Wait! Now Edwards is saying that his original quote was actually:

"You play to outfox the suckers that don't understand draft position, who try to win the game!!"

I dont understand how anyone can still think that Norv has a chance to retain his job with a 8-8 slip-in playoff apearance? Nothing will save Norvs job after 4+ years of the general majority of fans calling for his head. We will get what we have wanted for years, even at the cost of cutting his exstension short. IMO AJ stays, and that is the smartest move short of the Exile of Norv. Granted alot of the shortcomings can fall directly on AJ, I cant imagine that anyone else out there will present a better choice. *keep in mind AJ on open market would be the top canidate for all open positions* AJ has ONE more chance with me to do what he has promised to do for going on a decade now.

    I H8 Norv.

AJ had that one last chance this year, and he blew it...... he deserves to get canned at least as much as Norv. More so, in my opinion.

Agree, the only thing you cant lay at Norv's feet are the players. That AJ thought this OL would be acceptable is confusing at best.

It is a No for me, until we are mathematically eliminated then I am all for losing to ensure better draft slot and ridding ourselves of the cancer than is Norv and AJ. Had they lost to the Raiders last year in game 16, we would have had a pick somewhere around 6 spots higher and Norv would have been gone.
