Manchester City bid accidentally for Barcelona's Lionel Messi
    By Subhankar Mondal, Reporter
Filed: Sunday, August 19, 2012 at 05:59 UK

Manchester City made an accidental bid for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi in the summer of 2009, according to the club's former chief executive Garry Cook.

Cook recalls the incident in Gary James's book 'The Manchester City Years' that deals with the history of the club.

Cook explains how on the final day of the summer transfer window in 2009, City approached Barca for the Argentina international by mistake, as club officials in Manchester, London and Abu Dhabi were trying to conduct business over the phone.

"An executive made a comment like, 'it's all getting messy'," he revealed.

"Via the phone lines and the other communication lines, this somehow translated into 'get Messi'.

"An offer was made for Lionel Messi of about £30m. Needless to say, it was rejected."

City subsequently went on to sign Robinho from Real Madrid for £32.5m on that day.

City eke out a win. Mancini is going to freak. They are going to have to keep shopping. And if Aguero is out long term... even keep Adebayor.

So happy United lost. Van PurseStrings calls that a winning team?!! Also equally upset at Nasri's winner. Santi Cazorla was a great buy and looked great vs Sunderland. Unfortunately they parked the bus so we couldnt score.

Since you were born there, I imagine you've seen it already. :roflmao:

Frankfurt was nicer than I expected when I went there for the Womens World Cup Final. That stadium is top notch. Seeing Eintracht Frankfurt play would be a treat.

Reading played Chelsea tough, but an off-sides goal by Torres took away their bid for a point.

Bamberg is in trouble. I'm on their facebook page. After the 2nd game of the season, they sold their 3 best players, and haven't spent a dime to replace them. The fans are up in arms. Such a shame for an amazing city.

Koln could be in trouble too, but I think it's just early for them.

What division is this? Is it the 2nd Division in Germany?

Andy Carroll gone to West Ham on loan. Hammers agree to pay his €101, 000 weekly salary. Awful lot of money to pay a donkey.

I will be slumming it somewhat on October 13th next, I will be in Liverpool to see Tranmere Rovers play Yeovil Town in League One, although looking at the table they currently occupy the top two places.

Koln is in the 2nd German league, they were relegated from the 1st division last year.

My poor Bamberg Smokey beers are in the 4th Regionalliga division.

The DFB agreed with Viennalager that having Fortunal Duesseldorf play their first home game to a closed stadium was ruled too harsh. The ESPRIT arena is full.

Cazorla is class! Podolski too! God I hate RVP....goddamn traitor. That goal vs Fulham was genius though....definitely top 5 in his career.

Cazorla is very talented, as is Podolski.

Giroud looks terrible in my opinion. His passes have been horrific. Not sure why he is getting the playing time that he is.

I think you are being too harsh on him. His hold-up play and movement have been very solid. He just needs to relax and the goals will come. As for his passing, I don't really remember him attempting that many passes...but he did have 10 assists for Montpellier last year so I'm sure that'll turn out alright.

Ok, I'll give him more of a chance. The only thing I noticed good that he does is create space for himself. His shots have been so off the mark it's incredible. I've seen his passes be weak and not connecting to the target. But, I'll let a few more weeks pass by and see if he finally settles in.
