Players in Bold should be drafted in 1st round or high 2nd round as a result. Players in Blue should rate as a 2# to 3# round selection and may also project at S while they are listed on most draft boards as CB.
VJ is the #1 WR. He got separation all game vs. Seattle. Rivers kept underthrowing and missing. SD has no need to spend next year's #1 on a WR.
The only decent receivers we have are Jackson and Parker. We need another quality receiver. 2nd rounder on Higgins would be great.
even then, Parker scares the crap out of me. he gets rag-dolled out there by the defenses' smallest guy :icon_eek: some of the hits he takes makes me go "OHHSNAP! is he alright??!"
is dorien bryant planning to come out?? man, the chargers are going to be so strong after another draft... we need a safety. safety, wr, ilb (yes, another one), back up for jamaal and some more beef...
We need another speed receiver no doubt about it. But a #2 is way too heavy of a price to pay for one. You can get good receivers in the 3rd through 5th round.
I think we will wait and get maybe Marcus Monk who is 6'5 and has great hands and more than adequate speed! Dont forget Malcolm Floyd looked promising till he got hurt he made a great catch against Pittsburgh and showed he can play, I think a 3rd round WR would be about right!
The key element is we need a possession WR to replace McCardell, The larger question is will he be simply a possession wr like Steve Smith USC ( 3rd round) or a possession wr who could make a move and take it to the house like Ted Ginn or Johnnie Lee Higgins ( 1 or 2round). __________________
I like Monk but he looks like Floyd or a little slower Jackson so why draft him for the Bolts? Right now with Parker out and McCardell hurting you see Rivers struggling. Now not all of that is on the wr but Rivers strength is hitting short to medium passing routes and Parker and McCardell excel in those routes. Jackson is a fade man or a go route slant man. The under , drag and curl / timing quick choppy break timing routes are not the domain of most 6' 5" players.
I looked at that and here is what I found. A hit wr in my book is a player who has 700 yds or more with 1000 being a star It looks pretty clear that of the wr who hit or are close to our marks most are drafted in the 1st or 2 nd rounds , 7 rd Marques Colston Saints 59 /917 /7 is the only wr who was not selected in the top two rounds to push the magic 1000 yd mark. What we also see is that we only have 14 wr out of 45 taken in the top 2 rounds and 5 out of 123 drafted in rounds after the 2nd round and including F.A. who one could say are red chip type of players. Those stats are compiled by me based on drafts from 2002 thru 2006. What is also clear is that WR rates up their with QB in the degree of difficulty drafting a star or red chip player.
Why? He's made some plays, but alligator armed a bunch of others. He's quit on routes when the ball isn't designed to come to him. He spent the offseason in Miami, instead of getting his timing down with shEli. I'll take a developing VJ over Burress any day.
This is excellent work. Great data. Shows the risk of drafting WRs, but also shows you probably got to take the risk to get a star. Very interesting.
I've seen him quit on routes, have sideline spats, throw up his arms complaining the ball didn't come to him, short arm passes because he was going to get hit ..... Yes, he's a great talent. He's also a "me" guy who doesn't participate in the team's offseason program. Listen to any great WR talk about "chemistry" and timing with a QB, and you'll find the biggest element is practice repetition. Burress' (and Shockey) decision to not build that chemistry with shEli is a big part of shEli's stunted growth and disappointing season. But .... you like his "package" or some other such nonsense. Get quality players that are willing to commit to the team, not individuals intent on being self serving jackasses.
He's one club drink away from an arrest that carries a suspension. It's a matter of when, not if .....
Boise State wide receiver Drisan James made a few plays and is another wr who should get a longer look. Steve Smith with USC once again was over shadowed by Jarret but he runs some real nice routes and he looks like a good under wr. He won't get the higher draft slot as he doesn't have the big speed nor the size to break tackles but he has very good hands.
The question that I would ask GT head man is " Why did you play QB Ball who could not hit the side of a barn with a pass when Taylor Bennett was on the team?" Calvin Johnson is the best College WR this year and one of the all time great talents ever and you play a running QB who can't pass. Rich Rodriguez, right, and Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey , Rodriguez did some great coaching over coming the lost of his star RB. Gailey has to wonder just how good his team would have been if he had started Bennett at QB this season.
Harry Douglas | WR was one of the players who stood out for me. His speed and quickness were clearly more than Wake could handle. Riley Skinner | QB is going to be special . He is extremely accurate and I can't remember a freshman being that poised in the pocket. I did not think that Gattis made enough big plays for him to stand out as a real high draft choice. His numbers will play a factor for sure so the jury is still out but I don't see him in round 1 for sure, 2nd or 3rd round perhaps.
Top of my list in this department includes . Reggie Nelson kid has it all big hitter can cover keep a eye on him in the title game vs Ohio State. Michael Griffin isn't as fast as Nelson but he is a little larger and he has a lot of speed and he lays the lumber. WR Jarrett isn't the smaller underneath type of WR that Parker or MCardell are and the chances are very low he would slip down to where the Bolts pick but clearly he is a talent. Great hands , leaping ability and he understands the need to make some moves in order to set up a DB. Ted Ginn -His speed and quickness is very special , his size is a concern but he has played big time college ball with out any real injury issues. He is a threat to score every time he touches the ball and his quickness fits the charger short to medium passing game real well. He must work on his routes and his fakes but that's why you pay position coaches.
It is very early in the evaluation process we have the senior Bowl and combine days to go however after watching a lot of football and doing a lot of home work I am elevating Dwayne Bowe at WR for the Chargers. Dwayne Bowe 6' 2" 220 LBS 4.49 40 yd He has great hands and he runs very good routes he is one of the most polished WR in the draft and appears to be more N.F.L. ready than most. He is very well built he reminds me of Anquan Boldin with more speed. With his size and his route running he should work very well in the Charger passing game. The Chargers need a wr who can excel running quick underneath routes and one that has the potential to turn a small passing play into a large one. Bowe does not have the explosive artful dodger attribute you find with Ted Ginn but he does have a lot of power like Boldin and that power means broken tackles. His size allows him to sit down in his routes and he is better able to cut with out losing speed which is very important in the short to medium passing game the Chargers use. Bowe has demonstrated big play ability against the SEC teams and I do mean the SEC teams not the Fla Southern that Rice has made plays against but rather Auburn , Miss , Miss state , Tenn , Ark , Kentucky and N.D. Fresno ST Arizona His vision correction surgery elevated his game in 2006 Pryor he was named to the SEC all -academic team after the surgery in 2006 he was named to the All- SEC team. He lead the sec with 12 TD receptions in 2006 , his 21 TD catches ties Michael Clayton for school record. In addition he is a very good blocker which is very important with the Charger run game. He clearly is a great fit and looks to be Bolt worthy.
Senior Bowl list of players is the best ever in that almost all of the top rated players will play and work out. Forget getting Rice or Higgins What we should be aiming for is getting Rice AND Higgins! Those two with VJ, Gates, and LT would give us the best offense of all time I honestly think that offense would break the NFL record for points no matter who the coach or OC is
On a side note if Smith took Adam Carriker DE 6-6 290 Nebraska if he or Amobi Okoye DT/DE and rotated Igor between NT and DE I would call him brilliant. Or perhaps more brilliant , both of those young men look to be very special and DL that fit the bill are the foundation of the 3-4. Right now it looks like Bowe stock is on the rise and Rice is falling. Tell you what after Rice runs a slow 40 watch him slip he may fall to the second round. MtlBoltsFan my your very quite. I think you were posting what a piece of Sit WR Bowe is , now we have the Senior Bowl practices and he is shining like a star your no where around.
