Czar breaks down games, salary cap

The Chicago Bears, a franchise historically known for being a little on the cheap side, are the NFL's only team with less than $1 million in salary cap space. Only the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions are on the books for spending more money this season on players heading into the opening weekend. However, both teams had higher salary cap numbers this season and ostensibly more money to spend.
The Bears have just $647,600 of cap room. And, interestingly, the team with the most salary cap room — $19,047,770 — is the Minnesota Vikings, a team competing with the Bears. Another NFC North rival of the Bears, the Green Bay Packers, rank among 13 teams with double-digit savings. The Packers had cap room of $12,799,453 as of Friday.

The defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts are known for paying their stars — for example, Dwight Freeney received a $15 million signing bonus this season — yet they ranked fifth overall with salary-cap room of $13,319,243. The Cowboys have almost $13 million in room and the Eagles, a team noted for doing an excellent job with talent while keeping a careful eye on spending, had $9.7 million in salary-cap room.

League-wide, accounting all 32 teams, the total salary-cap room is $260.4 million.

How do the Broncos have so much? They went into the offseason with next to nothing and must have signed at least 30 new players to their active roster. They must really be pushing the big hits back. I wonder if it will bite them in the *** a few years down the road.
