    49ers Hire Manusky print

The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed that head coach Mike Nolan has hired Chargers linebackers coach Greg Manusky as the defensive coordinator.

Manusky joined the Chargers in 2002 from the Washington Redskins where he spent one season as the linebackers coach.

Manusky spent 12 years as an NFL player, playing in 113 consecutive games during his career, a streak that spanned more than seven seasons.

Manusky’s playing career included stops in Washington (1988-1990), Minnesota (1991-93) and Kansas City (1994-99). In each of his six seasons with the Chiefs, Manusky either led or tied for the team lead in special teams tackles.

After retiring from the NFL in 1999, Manusky spent the 2000 season as a volunteer at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ training camp where he worked with the linebackers and special teams.

Good for him, but it sucks for us. Bring in Mike Singleterry to coach the LB's.

Makes you wonder. If the coaches are loosing faith in the system, how long before the players follow. I would watch out for mass player defections at the end of next season. They are going to want the Quan, realizing a ring is nice, but a paycheck is golden.

This is the message the Coaches are sending.

Get ready to rebuild, yet again.

It's not AJ's decision to keep or fire Marty.

Do you seriously think Marty would still be here if it was?

I don't see how people are losing faith in the system.

What I see are coaches going for promotions, and other teams looking towards the Chargers system because of how much it seems to work.

If these assistant coaches were going elsewhere for the same jobs they had here, i'd be concerned.

But that's not the case, they're all getting promotions.

Cam - OC to head coach
Chudzinski - TE coach to OC
    Manusky - LBers to DC

    all promotions.

    Well, that's certainly strange.

Perhaps the whole "fued" thing is overblown?

If a ring was the important thing, then the coaches would have stayed on board. For some reason, they have decided to move on.

If they stay and win a SB, their stock goes much higher. Maybe they think there stock has reached it's peak and decided to go for the Quan.

So you're telling me that Cam Cameron thinks he has a better shot at a Superbowl ring in Miami than he would in San Diego next year?

You're telling me that Rob Chudzinski thinks he has a better shot at a Superbowl ring in Cleveland than he would in San Diego next year?

You're telling me that Greg Manusky thinks he has a better shot at a ring in San Francisco than he would in San Diego next year?

You know what else increaces an assistant coach's stock? A better position.

I don't see how you can blame Marty, especially when these coaches came out in support of him.

When offered a better position most coaches will take it. As for stalk really how many of these assistant coaches expected to be Head Coach this year or next?

Is there another position higher than head coach...

Seriously if your offered a better position to show case your talents almost everyone would do it.

Blame Marty indeed.. Only someone who hates Marty and is uninformed would.

I'm thinking they are ready to move on. Done with SD and Marty. Looking to get a paycheck. Maybe I am reading too much into this.

I hope you are right. I remember the season after the SB loss to the Whiners. Crap fell apart quickly. I hope this isn't a repeat, but history says otherwise.

You are correct on the bolded sections.

They're also looking to get a better position....like every single assistant coach in the NFL is.

Yup. I'm getting a bad feeling about next year.

If we can keep Wade and move Pagano to full-time defensive assistant, and if Shelmon can handle the OC gig, we should be okay. But I don't like the sudden instability in our front-office and coaching staff.

Is Bobby Beathard in charge of the general managing again?

We will not have a new coach if there are no good coaches out there. If we can find one of course, however if its worst than this year.. No

They are not abandoning Marty nor the system they are looking to move up and get paid more. Their stock can't rise any higher because frankly an assistant coach usually does get promoted to head coach right off the bat.

Manusky was a Linebacker coach, what 15 years?

Its not a unique thing, coaches leaving it happend to the Pats, Seahawks, Steelers, every team that has done well or won superbowls. Assistant coaches who serve time get promoted.

If anything its a good point on Marty that so many of his assistant coaches get promoted and many who could have gone elsewhere dont. Look how many came with marty when he move to San Diego.

I'm not even gonna begin to rant about this. I have already made my feelings known about Manusky, and now none of that matters. He's gonna be a hell of a DC and I wish him nothing but the best in his new position with the 49ers.

I hope some of you WE GOTTA KEEP MARTY are seeing what this course of action has done. No faith from the staff because the writing is on the wall. Might as well just fire Marty now, how the hell can you have stability when every single decent coach we have is bailing?!?!? The curse of the LAME DUCK strikes again. Thanks Dean!

    5 years.

You're probably confusing him with Shelmon being a RB coach for about that long.

You think if Marty had signed the extension and the 49ers offered Manusky a DC job that he wouldn't have accepted it?

I wonder if Patriots fans got this paranoid when Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss both left in the same year for promotions.

    It doesn't matter now.

Everyone knows Marty's not gonna be here next year, so why would ANY of the coaches stick around? Don't get me wrong, it's great that our OC and LB coach are getting promotions, but I don't see this team doing a very good job giving them a reason to stay either.

When the first assistant coach leaves for the same position with another team i'll start getting concerned about people losing faith in the system.
