49ers' Smith has more than defense to crack in Bay Area

    SAN DIEGO ---- To play quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, one must contend with more than just opposing defenses. Just as intimidating are the ghosts of the past.

    In his second season as the signal caller in the City by the Bay, Alex Smith is well versed in the mythology.

    "It's different ---- it's not like coming into a place where they've never known what to expect," Smith said. "You can go all the way back to Y.A. Tittle, John Brodie, (Joe) Montana, (Steve) Young and even (Jeff) Garcia played well when he was here, so there's a long line of guys that have done it here."</blockquote>
