The San Diego Chargers have signed inside linebacker Matt Wilhelm to a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2011 season. Wilhelm was due to become an Unrestricted Free Agent upon the expiration of his current contract after this season. No other terms of the new contract were announced.

“Matt is one of this team’s rising young defensive players,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “He has played solid football when called upon at the inside ‘backer position and has been very productive as a special teams player. We are pleased that we will have Matt with us for years to come.”

Wilhelm, 6-4, 245, is in his fourth season with the Chargers after being drafted in the fourth round in 2003 out of Ohio State. He has played 39 NFL games, including all 30 games in 2005-06. Wilhelm has made key contributions on both defense and special teams. This season he ranks among the team leaders with 13 special teams tackles and also has 14 tackles on defense.

“I’m just glad we were able to get this done now,” Wilhelm said. “I wanted to be here and the organization wanted me to be here. I know the defense and now that I’ve been in Wade Phillips’ system for three years, I can go out there and do my job to the best of my ability. I’m still just 25 years old and would love to play my entire career in San Diego. I love being a part of this team. I didn’t want to go anywhere else because I love playing with the group of guys we have here.”

That's good news, I like Wilhelm and would really want to see if he's as good as I think he is.

I think Donnie should stay a Charger until he retires. He's been clutch this year. We wouldn't be 12-2 without him.

Philips and Dielman need to be the priorities. I am kinda losing hope we can keep Dielman as his price tag keeps climbing. Anybody of the salary cap experts got any inside scoopage on what the most likely scenario is with these two?

That's true. We'd be 14-0 with an ILB that can attack the LoS with the ferocity of a rabid pit bull.

The cap will go up next season and we will save some money at MLB , I expect that Smith will try and get Dielman done first before he hits the open market. I also understand that Dielman wants to stay in S.D.

Goff will still be on the team. (He's having a good year, BTW)

Goff is still the weakest starter after the Ankle Biter. A guard MUST be able to pull outside the tackle box and complete blocks at the second level. Goff can do neither. He can pull within the tackle box (50 Power) and make seal blocks on ISO's to his side, but that's it. Also, the Chargers biggest pass protection liability has been when teams shoot extra LB's through the C-RG (Hardwick-Goff) gap. Goff doesn't seem to adjust well on the fly after the initial protection is called by Hardwick at the LOS (pre-snap).

But ..... the ball watchers think Goff is just fine. [IMG]

Osgood also deserves crap anytime he steps onto the field when it doesn't involve the special teams. He gets no separation, has ball location problems, and hands of stone.

I've done my share of crapping on Polk over the years, but this year he has played at a solid journeyman level. I do hope AJ upgrades that roster spot, but Polk hasn't made the slew of bonehead mental errors and penalties that marred his previous seasons.

Hart deserves a lot of crap. He can't cover worth a damn. A few INT's and people over look how many mistakes he's made in coverage when asked to be in space. He's a cover-2 disaster waiting to happen. I'm not very found of Jue either. We need at least two new safeties next season, hopefully one moderately priced FA and one from the first day of the draft. Kiel most likely will be breaking rocks and picking up road side trash, and even if he isn't, I'd bet AJ pawns him off because of the cough syrup "problem" with his character.

Great job to AJ once again for signing one of our young talents long term. As far as Donnie is concerned, thanks for his service over the last couple of years. You could have stayed a Charger for the rest of your career, but you didn't want to take any of AJ's offers the last 2 years.

Even I got to admit this is an excellent post.

But the blatant Donnie Haters can still kiss my arse. He is stepping up in the stretch.

Is it just me, or does Matt Wilhelm kinda look a little bit like Bill Romanowski?
