    SAN DIEGO ---- Cornerback Antonio Cromartie converted one college start into being the Chargers' first-round pick Saturday in the NFL draft.

    The second round brought Auburn left tackle Marcus McNeill to San Diego, and Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst was tabbed in the third round.

    But it was the Chargers' initial selection, the 19th overall, that some considered a reach.

    While there's no discounting the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Cromartie's physical skills, he last played in a game in 2004. Last July, he shredded his left knee, which robbed him of his junior year at Florida State.</blockquote>
