Yeah, esp that 4-12 season. Hey, at least it got us Rivers.

I have never said Marty didn't bring us back to respectability (he did), just that he couldn't finish the job.

Just to add to this. Most of the ranting is happening by the "newer" Charger fans. This team was around before Marty. In other words you have no idea what it is like to go through some of those seasons. You jumped on the bandwagon at the highest point.

Totally agree. We needed someone to get us over the hump. What we got was a step backward

I don't remember a whole lot of people (a small minority, maybe) who were satisfied w/ Norv's hiring. Most of us we're pissed and now we're seeing why.

I do know some people who bought into the "In AJ I trust" Motto, so they didn't question the hiring. I didn't have the same belief

I trust AJ, so I did eventually buy into that crap. I've sold that stock now before it hits rock bottom (amost there).

I trusted him with draft picks, I never trusted him with his coaching picks. But even his draft picks have been VERY suspect the last 3-4 years

AJ vs the other GMs I'd say AJ's got a pretty damn good track record when it comes to hit and miss

His 1st few year, yes. I am not so sure the last 3-4 year. Plus I also question how much of those great draft years were because of BUddy Nix being the scouting director. He left on bad terms a couple days after the 08 draft, which was terrible. And the drafts since then haven't been very good either

    THIS!

MOST of us didn't like the hiring of Norv. Some decided to piss and moan about it non-stop from the moment it was announced, and now those people are filled with glee and playing the "I told you so" card. The rest of us didn't like it, but knew that he was our guy for the foreseeable future, so we might as well get on board and hope for the best.

I personally wanted Marvin Lewis when Marty was hired, and Rex Ryan this last time around. But nobody asked me.

As I recall, BFISA was the only one happy at the time of the hiring.

I think a few have gone full-board in support of Norv since, but I'm pretty sure BFISA was the only one that liked it at the time....or at least was the only one very vocal about his approval.

It's supposed to mean that Marty isn't the saint some of you younger folks paint him to be.

I think this is a key quote many on this forum need to take from one of the links in the OP.

Marty had the contractual right to hire his own staff. If he wanted to hire you to run his defense, he had that right. AJ didn't like that he didn't have control and fired Marty as a result. He then hired Ted Cottrell. I can't imagine that Marty's brother could possibly be worse than fat teddy

For the 8 billionth time, Dean Spanos fired Marty. Pretty much anyone in any job who gets in a pissing match with the boss loses.

Did you even read the links?

    1. AJ did NOT fire Marty.

    2. AJ recommended Marty be kept on for at least one more year.

    3. It was Dean Spanos' policy to not have brothers on as coordinators

    4. Dean Spanos fired Marty

Please get your facts straight before continuing in this conversation.

It's more reliable than blindly trusting the misconceived beliefs of a bunch of people who don't work for any media outlets and have an agenda that just spew what the person next to them tells them.

Were you even paying attention to the team when this all went down? Of course not, you were 14 or 15 years old when that happened.

AJ recommended that Marty be kept on, which is why he wasn't fired right after the loss and the team watched potential head coaches get hired elsewhere while they still held onto Marty Schottenheimer.

But then Marty violated DEAN SPANOS' policy and tried to hire his brother and DEAN SPANOS fired Marty.

AJ Smith didn't even have the authority to fire Marty even if he wanted to do so.

Look, if you want to argue that Marty got the bum end of the deal from the Chargers organization in general you're certainly free to your opinion on that matter. But at least get your facts straight when discussing who fired who.

I know Dean fired him. But it was only after Marty denied the low ball contract(That A.J recommened) from Dean. Marty then went an tried to hire his brother. Didn't sit will with Dean and was fired. "Bum end of the deal" please everyone knows he did.

You can't hide behind the curtain of "opinion" when you're spouting off fact-based claims such as "the low ball contract(That A.J recommened)"

It's opinion that the soundness of an argument is based on the usage of fact? Whoa!
