All of the talk in the linebacker thread got me thinking about the 53, specifically regarding whether or not some of the veterans make the squad this year. Let's take a look at a mock roster:

    Offense - 25
QB: Philip Rivers, Billy Volek, Charlie Whitehurst
RB: LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles, Gartrell Johnson
    FB: Jacob Hester
WR: Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Legadu Naanee
    WR: Chris Chambers, Buster Davis
TE: Antonio Gates, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kris Wilson
    LT: Marcus McNeill, L.J. Shelton
    LG: Kris Dielman, Tyronne Green
    C: Nick Hardwick, Scott Mruczkowski
    RG: Kynan Forney, Luis Vasquez
    RT: Jeromey Clary, Corey Clark

    Defense - 25
    LE: Luis Castillo, Jacques Cesaire
    NT: Jamal Williams, Ian Scott
    RE: Ryon Bingham, Vaughn Martin
OLB: Shawn Merriman, Jyles Tucker, Antwan Applewhite
ILB: Tim Dobbins, Kevin Burnett, Darry Beckwith
    ILB: Stephen Cooper, Brandon Siler
    OLB: Shaun Phillips, Larry English
CB: Quintin Jammer, Antoine Cason, Brandon Hughes
    CB: Antonio Cromartie, Cletis Gordon
    SS: Steve Gregory/Paul Oliver/Kevin Ellison
    FS: Eric Weddle

    Specialist - 3
    K: Nate Kaeding
    P: Mike Scifres
    LS: David Binn

Now, I left off three guys we've talked about quite often over the last year or so: Hart, Osgood, and Wilhelm. But, when you try and put together the 53 man roster, you really start to see that they just might not make the cut this year. Siler has been taking more a leadership role on special teams, and with Ellison looking to do whatever it takes to make the team, could they spell the end of Kassim?

Wilhelm had a down year last year, and his first full year as a starter in 07 underwhelmed me as well. Does he keep his spot on the team, kicking off a young player like Beckwith, Applewhite, Siler, or Tucker?

Hart's struggles were well documented last year. By the end of the year he had lost his job to an undersized, slow Gregory, who is far from a great player himself. I've read that Hart wants to take the starting job back, but do people want him on the roster if it means that Oliver or Ellison are cut?

    What say you?

I don't know. I think Yogi is gone unless we cut one of the running backs......

    Hester makes the team regardless.

Kynan Forney depending on how he holds up in the competition

    Ian Scott perhaps? Matt Wilhelm?
I'd even say there's potential for Clinton Hart to be cut

    what about Michael Bennett?

I think Floyd or Osgood are gone

and depending on Gates health, we could keep just two TE's

I doubt bennett will come as a 'surprise' to anyone
Floyd/Osgood are both almost entirely secured in their jobs
and the Chargers apparently really like Kris Wilson as a TE/FB hybrid so he might stick around

Darry Beckwith played and started in 11 games. He was named one of eight finalists for the 2008 Butkus Award, which goes to the top linebacker in college football. He was named second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press.

He missed two games (Auburn and Mississippi State) with an injury suffered in the second quarter against North Texas. He had eight tackles in back-to-back games against Troy and Ole Miss. Darry had six tackles, including one for a two-yards loss vs. Alabama.

Although he isn't the best pass-rusher on the team, he makes up for it with great instincts. Look for him to pass Wilhelm on the depth

Darry Beckwith isn't going to make this team. Neither is Brandon Hughes IMO.

For all the talk about Kassim, it sounds like he's going to be with this team and accept his role. I also think they're keeping Mike Tolbert. I also think Clinton Hart will be sticking around and Kevin Burnett will be starting opposite Cooper. I think Tyronne Green can play multiple positions and that makes Clark expendible.

    Offense - 26
QB: Philip Rivers, Billy Volek, Charlie Whitehurst
RB: LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles, Gartrell Johnson
    FB: Jacob Hester, Mike Tolbert
WR: Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Legadu Naanee
WR: Chris Chambers, Buster Davis, Kassim Osgood
TE: Antonio Gates, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kris Wilson
    LT: Marcus McNeill, L.J. Shelton
    LG: Kris Dielman, Tyronne Green
    C: Nick Hardwick, Scott Mruczkowski

So, what your saying is we stand pat with the same offense as last year.

    no change.

I guess I can get behind that.

Although, I would hate to see Bennett go.
