Most of Antonio Cromartie's teammates had long since left the field, headed for the next phases of the pro football player's training camp routine -- shower, dinner, meetings, sleep.

But the Chargers' first-round draft choice was still on the field, doing footwork drills with fellow cornerback Cletis Gordon and safety Jerrell Pippens.

Let's put that into perspective. This is the 19th player taken in the draft, who might have been a top-10 pick or higher if anterior cruciate ligament surgery hadn't sidelined him for all of 2005. He's doing extra work with guys who, to be quite frank, probably won't approach his spot on the depth chart -- an undrafted free agent (Gordon) and a guy who has spent his two NFL seasons on the practice squad or special teams (Pippens).

"We want to get ourselves better, not just during practice but also before and after," said Cromartie, drenched in sweat, after he finally came off the field.</blockquote>
