Interesting question, although Russell will reportedly receive $32million guaranteed. Missing a single game check probably won't hurt.

Then again, this is the Raiders we're talking about. Not exactly the smartest kids in the class when it comes to dealing with personell. Lost in all of this was McCown lighting up the lions for 313 yards.

The game check Russell is docked came from the $285K rookie base salary, divided by 17.

    That's only $16,700 or so.

Almost chump change when you are dealing with a $60+ million contract.

As long as JR is active for at least 6 games this year, he earns one accrued season, and gets the entire amount of his bonus/guaranteed monies. Note, I said active, not playing. He needs to be on the team's list of 45 activated players from their roster of 53, in at least six of those weeks. It doesn't matter if he ever gets into a game this year. Being on the active list is most important to get paid.

Where JR is getting his shitload of money for the first 3 seasons is in that guaranteed monies. In total, he will receive about $24 million (base salary + bonuses + guaranteed monies) in those first 3 seasons. The base salary for the first 3 seasons will probably come out to only a total of about $4 million.

Now, because he gets to miss this entire season, or at least the great majority of it, he can sit on millions of dollars and fuq around this year.

That may be why he held out so long.

I wouldn't be surprised if he suddenly had a "magical" hamstring injury next year's TC that kept him out next season too.

Maybe, but I also know that if I had to play for the Raiders behind that OL, my hands would have a hard time working properly in order to sign a contract.

At least until it was assured that I would get a one season reprieve.

No, the offer that was signed was almost exactly the same offer that the Raiders put up several months ago.

It was Russell's agent that caused the delay.

The main sticking point was that after the Michael Vick thing, the Raiders put in language that would allow them to recoup some of that guaranteed monies should he be suspended games by the commish for any off-field activities, a la Pac-Man or Chris Henry. JR's agent balked at this and said no way, guaranteed money is guaranteed money, no matter how much of a dick JR should become off-field.

That was the main reason for the long delay.

I think it has more to do with the Raiders thinking Russle would break than there being some nefarious plot to beat the cap.

I think that the Raiders thought they could low ball him and that he would come crawling to them. When they lost their QB with a broken finder, and had very little choice, they decided to sign him to what he wanted.

    I dunno about that Conc.

They still had Culpepper who could have moved up to #1, and Walter who would have been #2. McCown drops to the #3 spot and JR would still have been sitting at home getting fatter on pizza and beer without a contract.

Ok so what is it then, they get no extra cap room from the move. What was the grand evil scheme behind all of this posturing?

The "grand evil scheme from the posturing" was mainly in part of the language of the offered contract. As I said, the Raiders wanted to be able to recoup some of his guaranteed monies they paid him should he get suspended for off-field activities. The same way the Falcons are now going after some monies paid to Vick after his conviction and suspension. Russell's agent said "no farkin' way!" and, viola!, holdout.

The actual monies are virtually the same as offered back in July. The part about the $61 million possibly being worth $68 million seems to be new. The main sticking point though, seems to be the Raiders wanting to be able to recoup guaranteed monies should JaMarcus do off-field crap like Pac-Man, Chris Henry, or Vick.
