The San Diego Chargers placed tight end Aaron Shea on Reserve-Injured today due to a back injury. Shea will miss the remainder of the season.

Safety Andre Lott was signed to replace Shea on the active roster. Lott returns after being released on the team’s final cut to reach the 53-man roster limit. He is in his fourth NFL season out of the University of Tennessee.

The team also released quarterback Brett Elliott from the practice squad. Tight end Kelly Griffeth, a rookie out of Fort Hays State in Kansas, has replaced Elliott on the practice squad. Like Lott, Griffeth also was released by the Chargers on the final cut.

My guess would be Tight End depth. Since Shea is out, we have only 3 TEs. If one goes down, we'll need another on the roster.

Yeah. Now that we have Volek, he can run the PS, making Elliott expendable.

By putting Shea on IR, we need a fourth TE as backup, hence Griffeth.

Hopefully, Krause can come back in time to allow us to run some 3 TE sets in short yardage situations.

Otherwise, Griffeth could be readied for such a role.

TE depth , he did not jump out in TC anyway. Kelly Griffeth is another TE they liked and they want to be sure they can run the Elephant offense if we lose a TE.

Well Shea really proved he was a worthy signing. I'm pretty sure he can get his money back for his cleats since they don't have any mud or grass stains on them.

Shea must've been pretty banged up

Volek will be the #3 and must figure long term to be that. He'll be moved to #2 when we get closer to getting into the playoffs and during the playoffs

Lott, hey, you never can have enough DBs
Griffeith I think they want to train to take over for Manumaleuna in the future
Krause is still banged up but could be useful if he ever is HEALTHY!

Has Krause ever been healthy other than when our second stringers pasted KC a couple years ago? He looked great in that game and then poof he disappears......

Good thing we have a guy named Gates and this other 300 pounder named Manullllaaamamnafadada.

Check out how big our TEs are:

    Manu - 288 lbs
    Griffeth - 298 lbs

That's one heck of an elephant package, throwing in 260 lb Gates!
