Deal or no deal: Five trades that will never be

    By Adam Schefter
    Special to NFL.com

(Oct. 11, 2006) -- With the NFL's trade deadline looming Tuesday, here are five deals that absolutely should be -- but foolishly won't be -- made.

    1) Oakland wide receiver Randy Moss to the New England Patriots for a first-round pick: New England already has two No. 1 picks, the second of which it acquired from Seattle for wide receiver Deion Branch. Take one and deal it to Oakland for the game's most talented wide receiver. If New England could get Corey Dillon to buy into being a Patriot, then it could do the same for Moss.

Joey Porter wants a trade, but he likely won't get his wish this season.
    2) Oakland wide receiver Jerry Porter to Minnesota for a conditional third-round pick: The teams that are used to being involved in blockbuster receiver deals should pull off another. Porter has destroyed much of his value, but he's still worth a third-round pick that could climb to a second based on playing time.

    3) San Diego running back Michael Turner to the Philadelphia Eagles for a second-round pick: :icon_eek: Before Turner becomes a restricted free agent after this season, San Diego should get a second-round pick for him now. And Philadelphia should give it up. A back such as Turner could be the difference between a good season and a great one.

    4) Seattle wide receiver Darrell Jackson to Kansas City for a second-round pick: The Chiefs are lacking quality wideouts and the Seahawks have a surplus of them. Plus, Seattle's future revolves around Branch and Nate Burleson, not Jackson. Might as well get a quality pick for a quality player who would be happier elsewhere.

    5) Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre for Dallas quarterback Tony Romo and a third-round pick: This would be the equivalent of baseball teams trading a Hall of Famer for a quality young arm. And think how happy T.O. would be, getting to play with the quarterback he wanted to play with instead of Donovan McNabb.

Problem is, the Packers never will trade Favre. And these other trades aren't much more likely.

But just because they won't happen doesn't mean they don't make sense.

turner won't want a long term extension unless AJ just blows his brains off with a huge deal and we won't give him it.

A second round is WAY too cheap, get a first rounder at least or no go. In that way tag him with the highest tender possible and then let someone give us some big draft picks

It's a ****** deal, but what's worse is we didn't get anything after investing all that time into Brees. It will suck if we let Turner walk and not get any compensation for it because no matter what, he's going to be getting a lot of money to start someplace else next season:unsure: :icon_sad:

The way Michael Turner is integrating into our new two-back offense, he might end up with a fat 5 year, $20 million or $25 million deal from AJ.

Especially since the salary cap is expected to increase another $10 million next year. There will be room.

I would trade LT before I would trade Turner, regardless of the compensation.

Why would we deal Turner for a #2. We can offer him a first round tender this offseason since he's a RFA. If somebody wants to pony up a #1 for the Burner, they can have him. If not, we get to keep him around for one more year at a price of only like 1.8 mil.

The thing about Schefter's scenario that does not make any sense is that we don't have anyone behind MT to be our #2. We are not going to trade MT until we have another viable backup to LT.

That's just insane. This reminds me of when Bills fans were screaming for Jim Kelly to be traded so they could keep Frank Reich around. :icon_shrug:

The thing is. If a guy proves to be good in the nfl a team should really try and keep him. Its too hard to find the good ones and too hard to replace.

Tuner will get a top tender offer(1st or 1s&3rd) at the end of the season OR AJ will keep him around with a new Deal. Not sure what the 2006 tenders are going to be, but this is what they were in 2006 FA.

    In 2006:
    1st and 3rd: 2.069M
    1st : 1.552M
    Same as rnd Drafted: 721K

Why should Adam shut up. The more people talk about him, the more AJ can get for him.

    here's my point
Backups are players who are not good enough to start
Jesse Chatman was never going to be good enough to start but fell into LT's backup role nicely. He was happy here and we were going to keep him basically until he ate his way out of SD.
Its very similar for Correl Buckhaulter and Derrick Blaylock who could never be a starter but instead found good niches as backups.
Michael Turner can start for most teams in this league
    Michael Turner knows this
therefore Turner would have to be a damned fool to stay with this team when he knows he could never surplant LT
BUT AJ could put that to his advantage and sell him very high

    You know F all that.
We can take no less that a 1st rounder for Turner, every time he touches the ball I see "superstar" 1 year down the road.

Turner is exactly what we need right now, so unless its a deal that could land us Dwayne Jarret or Samardzja or my boy Calvin Johnson in the draft...**** it.

We most likely get a THIRD Round COMP pick from the NFL for Brees.

Personally I would hate loosing turner even for a first rounder. Proven very good players are hard to find. And that goes for phillps, florence and dielman as well. This is why A.j. has been saving those pennys to try and keep these guys that make the chargers better.

I'm guessing the only way we can't keep these guys is if they truly just want to leave. YOu can hang onto them for a while but eventually you might have to let them go. Seems some guys would like to play for their home teams that they grew up with. Or some just want to really cash in for huge money if possible.
