What he was offered wasn't a contract, it was an insult.

BS. Drew had a torn labrum. AJ could not in good conscience offer Drew huge guaranteed money when he had a torn up shoulder.

The irony is that if Drew had signed AJ's contract he would have essentially made the same amount of money in '06 as he made with the Saints. Since all teams vying for Drew were signing him to a one year deal with an option more more, Drew probably would have been better off taking our deal. Imagine how much money he would command this year if he were a free agent again.

You might not like AJ's contract offer, but it was not an insult. He was trying to balance all factors, and he determined that he couldn't give Drew a bunch of money before knowing if Drew could play at the same level as before the injury.

Bravo to AJ for his genius.

Ok, lets see if your logic stands up. First it was an incentive laden one year deal. Dree made it very well known he was looking for a multi year deal. Sure, you could probably make more money at your job it you renegotiated your salary every year, but keep in mind that you would have no security. How would that feel to you if your employer let you know that they weren't really interested in keeping you long term? Drew would have taken less money than he got in New Orleans for security.

Oh yeah, that incentive laden contract. There was no clause in it that stated he was guaranteed to start even if he was 100%, and with Rivers sitting the bench chances are that he wouldn't have got the start. Especially coming off a shoulder injury. The Chargers basically wanted Drew to be a one year backup QB.

Even coming off the injury, his market value was higher than if he was 100%, but sat the bench for a season. Oh yeah, I don't think he would have reached many of those incentives on the bench. How much was he guaranteed? Not much. This was not a contract you offer someone you want to keep.

Looking in hindsight, it's obvious now that Drew's shoulder injury wasn't an issue, but I don't blame AJ for doing what he did. It was probably the best thing for the team for Drew to move on, but to say this was some legit contract offer is absurd.

I was born on a day, it just wasn't yesterday, and I ain't buying the chit you're selling either.

Drew's deal with the saints is essentially a series of one-year deals, so the deal offered by AJ was fair, especially with the torn labrum and rotator cuff that he forgot to me mention! They just offered more in guarantees but the chargers deal was similar amount of money just not up front.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but Kris' "Hometown discount" may not be much of a discount at all.

Dockery and Steinbach will probably get released, or asked to take a pay cut, before ever seeing the full value of the contracts they signed. Kris might have actually made the best business decision, as well as the best personal one.

PS. Sounds like Deano played just as big a part in this as AJ. The thread title should credit them both.

Good point. I'm not sure how the contracts work with stienbach or dockery. But I believe I read dielman gets like 17 million in the first two years of the contract. I thought I'd read someplace where he gets paid a chunk of money the third year as well. CAn't find the article though.

It was a very needed signing. But it did cost alot. From what I've read free agency is over for the chargers now. There really are only a few players the chargers could use or pick in free agency. Possibly curtis or deon grant. But unless they give the chargers a discount I'm guessing free agency is about over for the chargers.

Very nice post and dead solid on. It was not a serious offer, but AJ did what he thoguht was best for the team. If some what to make it all one sided, that is their choice, but it is obtuse and not very well thought out in my opinion.

Wasnt it? How do you know. AJ has said publicly that 'Things are comming off of the table" when he has been negotiating contracts before. Why not now?

Basically he was not. The contract would give him nada, zero, nothing if the Chargers cut him. No guarantees, no mention of playing time. And to be to the point, AJ had given Drew nothing to make him want to 'trust' that Drew was going to be given a chance to even wear bolts the next year. You can wave your pom-poms and chant the company line on this. But if you were in the same spot I seriously doubt you would have wanted to take the 'contract' either.

You defend the man by sitting in the parking lot after a game the man helped the team win, saying "I just dont trust Drew Brees to lead this team." Or by posting many times that the guys was "too weak in the arm to be a winner." or "He is too short to be a winner."

Dude, please dont ever... EEEEEEVER defend me...

I found it strange that many of yall gave our starting QB less love than the backup when Drew was here.

But who is 'loving' Drew more than Rivers. i have yet to see anyone say that they want things reversed. People are just debating if Drew got a 'real' contract offer, and of course pointing out that Trummpie NEVER defended Brees.

The day that Brees said that in an interview. The Chargers released a statement saying it wasn't true. When asked about it then, Brees blamed a miscommunication with his agent.

Multi-Million dollar contract where the only thing you have to do is stay healthy?

That's not an insult no matter how much better the Saints' offer was.
