METAIRIE, La. -- Popular running back Deuce McAllister was released by the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday in a move that reduced the team's payroll as free agency approaches.

McAllister, the Saints' all-time leading rusher with 6,069 yards, was due over $7 million next season. The Saints said they granted McAllister his release so he could seek offers from other teams.

"I still have the itch to play," McAllister said, adding that he would not rule out returning to the Saints after he's been able to test the market.

"We've left that door ajar," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said, but added, "I wouldn't call it likely."

McAllister played a limited role in the Saints' offense this past season with 107 carries for 418 yards. McAllister has had reconstructive surgery on both knees.

"Decisions like this are always very difficult ones to make," Loomis said. "Deuce has epitomized hard work, leadership and productivity throughout his career and has been a source of great pride for all of us associated with the team."

McAllister had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee six weeks ago and said he could not pass a physical if he took one now. However, he expected to be ready by next season and believes he can play another three years or so.

McAllister said money was only part of the reason he wants to test the market. McAllister also said he wanted to see if a team out there would give him a greater role than he had last season in New Orleans, when he effectively worked as a third-string running back behind Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas.

"If you're a player, you want (the ball) more," McAllister said.

McAllister said he would always consider New Orleans home, will carry on his community service endeavors in the area and could foresee returning to the Saints in a front-office or assistant coaching role after his playing days have ended.

A first-round draft choice in 2001, McAllister also holds team records for touchdowns (55) and rushing touchdowns (49) and is the only Saints player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season four times.

He played in the Pro Bowl in 2002 and 2003. His last 1,000-yard season was 2006, when the Saints advanced to the NFC championship game. That also was the season before McAllister's second anterior cruciate ligament tear.

McAllister's first ACL tear occurred in his right knee early in the 2005 season and the second in his left knee in the third game of the 2007 season.

i doesnt really matter if bush has a breakout season or not, pierre thomas is a solid back with a lot of upside
he has power like burner turner but not as fast, a defensive player (who i cant remember) said, "dont worry about his size, he hits a lot harder"

bush can be used as the speed back
bush is a great returner and doesnt need to be relied upon as much with pierre in there, he had 2 punt return touchdowns in one game against minnesota and would hav had another if he didnt trip up
