I'm guessing he just paid his car registration on his hello kitty mobile and doesn't want to be out $10,000 for nothing.

I like it, he can play all 3 D-line positions and be a solid backup to Thomas. No need to draft D-line until day 3 now IMO.

If the right prospect falls to the 3rd, I'm not turning my nose up at talent. Then again, I don't see a ton of guys I'd classify as "the right talent" in the 3rd unless they were guys I have fringe 1st, early 2nd grades on who have gotten pushed down because of the amount of top-end talent at the position in this draft (Billy Winn for example, or Kendall Reyes who has no business escaping the 2nd round).

Well we can, we just don't need to. I might make an exception for Crick.

I wouldn't touch Crick till the 4th... too many injury concerns, too many consistency concerns.

Nice. So happy he signed. Really allows us to grab the best pass rusher or O-lineman that falls to us at 18.

Great to have him back. You knew it was getting close to the end when Rosenhaus said that they were setting up some visits with other clubs. That sounded like a bluff that was made to get the Bolts to up their offer.

Maybe, we'll actually get a OLB pass rusher in the 1st this time. ;)

Damn you folks really think AJ is going OLB pass rusher in the first round? I look at history and feel I will once again be disappointed (though OLB is what I'm hoping for)

He did take Merriman and English, so it isn't like he avoids the position

OLB, SS, and either OL or TE, but OLB and SS should be our 1st 2 picks

Except, AJ drafted English late, and he was a big reach. It didn't take a genius to see that Merriman was never going to recover his prior dominant form.

AJ Smith neglected the NT position for years as well. Everyone knew Jamal Williams wouldn't last forever, but we had nobody in the fold being developed to replace him. That's shortsighted and foolish. I wouldn't give Smith a lot of credit for recognizing the defense's biggest needs.

This is good news. I didn't want to have to replace this guy or watch him play well for another team. Good job AJ. (man it pains me to praise AJ!)

No one's saying he "avoids the position", but it sure would be nice to see him draft an immediate impact guy for a change, that could maybe play the position for 10 years.

Anyone know the terms on the contract other than the length, and/or how much remaining cap we have?

As much fun as it is to fantasize about immediate "impact" players,
aside from the rarity (i.e. Maurkice Pouncey in 2010) it's unusual
for the 18th pick to distinguish himself "immediately" or even in their
first few seasons (or, in the case of the the Erasmus Jameses, ever).
A review of the actual history reinforces this:
    http://www.mynfldraft.com/NFL-Draft-Picks/18th-overall/180309/

As much as I'd love a killer OLB who's a huge play-making pass rusher,
or minty-fresh young tight end who will make us forget about Winslow & Gates,
the reality is that history and odds say that the 18th pick will not be
a game changer. At least any time soon. (But it will still be AJ's fault!) ;)

If he's not an immediate impact player that's a factor of position. If he's never an impact player that's a bad pick, and guess who's responsible for the picks...

I'm pretty sure I was addressing the "immediate impact" fantasy.
(four different times in a medium-length post?)

the 17th and 19th overall picks have had some immediate impact players in the last 10 drafts, maybe we should trade up or down 1 slot...

We're probably still too far out for the "official 1st round draft selection guess".
    Bragging rights to the winner(s).

Did anyone have Liuget as their pick from last year?

Well Lance, "immediate impact" can be construed in a few different ways if your open to intepretation ofcourse.

I don't neccessarily mean the guy has to immediately impact in that he's regarded as the next Patrick Willis/Demarcus Ware, I'd be more than thrilled if the guy shows the ability to hold down the position from week to week in the early going and is seen to be making a consistent difference to our "D", early in his career.

There's NO fantasy here, rookies can be capable of making their mark well before the 4th or 5th year as you seem to imagine to be the norm here.
Its just that that hasn't been the case since AJ's tenure started, whether your willing to admit it or not, the proof's staring you right in the face if your willing to look at the play of those drafted in that time.

I asked Acee about him prior to the draft and he told me he had never heard the name mentioned in Chargerville...

After Garay, I wonder will Luis come back now too. Esp since he has already made off like a bandit with what the Chargers have given him over the last few years.

Again, Jack, you really DON'T have to try to contradict EVERY post I make (I get it, already...way back).

Okay, so all we have to do for your contradiction of my post to make any sense, is to now
define your "immediate impact" as a guy NOT "immediately impacting" and we're good.

All you had to do to disagree with me this time, was fold your own words back over themselves.
See, this is why I often walk away shaking my head, to let you and Blewy alone to comfort one another.

Oh hell........... we're not still on the "only the top ten picks yield impact players" mantra, are we? :roflmao:
