Antonio Gates gets his foot examined

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 26, 2010 1:23 PM ET

It wouldn't be a Chargers offseason without some medical problem for tight end Antonio Gates for fans (and fantasy owners) to worry about.

The latest issue is a familiar one. Gates is getting his foot checked out by a specialist in North Carolina, according to the team. The six-time Pro Bowler is coming off a career high in receiving yards, although his foot bothered him towards the end of the season.

Gates is entering a contract year and the Chargers were expected to talk about an extension with him this offseason. To date, we haven't heard anything about it. Gates may have to show he can stay healthy first.

I think Gates is looking for excuses to get out of San Diego.

Remember Gates sided with LT and I am sure A.J. caught wind of Gates poppin' off and the rest ... well ... time will tell.

I hope I am wrong as well but the fickled finger of fate (Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in reference) is a mother.

Gates needed to keep his mouth shut during LT's theatrical exit but he chose to sound off and I for one did not appreciate it even if it were the truth. Keep that **** in house and deal with it internally instead of using the media.

I suspect Gates time here is limited.

Then I guess Jammer's time is short here too. He also sided with LT.

I don't recall Jammer being as vocal (in media print) as Gates. I obviously did not read everything which was printed but Gates' comments stood out to me.

Jammer was more low key in the mud slinging but then again - it was what I only read.

And that is where some of the problem lies.....the media. It forms perceptions.

Gates and Jammer basically sided with LT from my reads. LT said (paraphrasing) he felt disconnected from the younger players and that he was not happy with the way he was being utilized and the no loyalty thing.

The goddamm Chargers made these a-holes MILLIONAIRES. Where is the thanks is my question upon exit?

Why not say upon given the boot ......"THANK YOU" and then go about their business as professionals ?

Instead some fans want to shove Bolts up LT's *** for being a dick.

LT could have pitched to stay for a vet minimum but he did not (he would have prevailed in my book if so). Instead LT went for the jack and for that I will NOT damn any man for trying to make a better living for his family. That is what he is suppose to be doing or that was the way I was raised.

    Rant off. :bolt:

Gates will have a mediocre year if he stays healthy. Luckily we drafted Dedrick Epps!

Ellison, Gates, more miss first practice

    Kevin Acee
    Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Antonio Gates has been experiencing foot soreness while working out in conditioning and coaching sessions recently, it was revealed Wednesday, and the Pro Bowl tight end missed the first day of Chargers minicamp in order to visit a foot specialist in North Carolina.
"It's nothing that's long-term," head coach Norv Turner said after the team's first practice of the three-day camp. "... We just want to be sure."
Also missing yesterday was safety Kevin Ellison, whom the Chargers asked to stay away this week following his arrest Monday for having 100 Vicodin pills when pulled over for speeding.
"I didn't personally want the distraction," Turner said.
Steve Gregory and rookie Darrell Stuckey took turns working with the first team at strong safety.
Darren Sproles worked on the side and watched team drills later, as he is nursing a sore hamstring. He was not pleased to be sitting out and expects to return to practice Thursday.
Outside linebacker Antwan Applewhite also didn't work. His surgically repaired hamstring was feeling a little balky. Applewhite has been full-go in coaching sessions and expects to practice Thursday.
As for those who did practice:

    • Rookie Ryan Mathews made his debut on the field with veterans, as he missed the first four of coaching sessions last week. He was admittedly nervous and even got pulled aside by Philip Rivers at one point. The quarterback told him to relax. Mathews, whose catching ability has been questioned, made a nice grab of a Rivers pass on the first play of team drills.
    • Punter Mike Scifres punted live for the first time since the season and said it felt good. He had surgery in February to repair an abdomen tear and bilateral hernia.
    • Placekicker Nate Kaeding kicked into a net for the first time. He has been resting a groin strain suffered on the first day of Pro Bowl practice.
    • Buster Davis had another good practice -- until he and Eric Weddle collided midair with about 20 minutes left in the session. Davis came up woozy and left for the training room. He was still a little dazed later but was walking around. Center Nick Hardwick charged down the field to confront Weddle after the play before being reigned in by teammates.
    • Ian Scott worked with the first team at nose tackle. The progression there will be interesting to watch in training camp, as Antonio Garay and rookie Cam Thomas figure to get more time.
    • With right tackle Jeromey Clary (recovering from ankle surgery) and left tackle Marcus McNeill (staying out to express his displeasure with his contract situation) not practicing, Corey Clark and Brandyn Dombrowski continue to work with the first team. Dombrowski acquitted himself well last year. He's a pro and could even challenge Clary this summer. But the Chargers DO NOT want to go into the season with him protecting Philip Rivers' blind side 70 plays a game.

Gates in N.C. for foot checkup

By Kevin Acee, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
    Thursday, May 27, 2010

Antonio Gates joined Kevin Ellison, the unhappy restricted free agents and A.J. Smith in not being at Chargers Park on Wednesday.
The perennial Pro Bowl tight end was neither in trouble with the law nor protesting his contract situation, but it could be something just as troubling in terms of how it affects the 2010 season, though the Chargers at this point think not.
While most of his teammates were taking part in the first practice of the Chargers’ three-day minicamp, Gates was in North Carolina seeing a foot specialist about soreness he has experienced the past couple weeks.
“It’s nothing that’s long-term,” head coach Norv Turner said after the team’s first practice of the three-day camp. “… We just want to be sure.”

Turner said the injury is not related to the toe injury that hampered Gates in the 2007 playoffs or the ankle injury that bothered him in 2008.
Gates is expected back at Chargers Park, perhaps as early as today.
Ellison will not be here this week.
The Chargers told him to not attend — mostly, they said, because they didn’t want the distraction.
“This thing happened obviously a couple days ago and I haven’t had time to sort it out, so I asked Kevin to stay away,” Turner said, referring to Ellison’s arrest on a drug charge Monday in Redondo Beach. “We have a week off next week in terms of our offseason program and we can find out a little bit more about the situation. … I didn’t personally want the distraction this weekend. I don’t want to spend a lot of time talking about it, so I won’t.”
In that the club has usually welcomed back players immediately after whatever legal or personal troubles they have incurred, this could be considered significant and a certain sign Ellison’s position on the team is tenuous.
Also missing yesterday (and today) was the team’s general manager. Smith and most of the rest of the personnel department are in Florida at league meetings assessing the 2011 draft class.

    Agreed.

And why did Gates wait until now to follow up ?

Screw the sand bagging and one upsmanship these aholes like to play on the team and the fans.

I suspect Gates was waiting for the opportunity to stick it to A.J. (by this pseudo bullshit gotta see the doctor ala Merriman hold out) since Gates was suspended for one game a few years ago.

TE Antonio Gates said he didn't mean to cause a disruption by missing the minicamp, but he wanted to see Dr. Robert Anderson, the same doctor who did Gates' foot surgery in 2008,The diagnosis? "A minor form of plantar fasciitis," Gates said.
