Was flipping through espn and on espn 2 I happened to catch the grand final of the AFL(austrailian footbal league). I have heard of it before and knew the just of the game but never had seen a full game before. Its kinda like soccer mixed with rugby mixed with football+ hand dribbling mixed with fg kicking. Its some pretty crazy ****. 18 men vs 18 men with full contact and people running around wityh a football punting it on the run. I knew Darren Bennett the great former bolt punter came from aussie football and now I see why he was such a good punter. These guys have insane kicking skills like ive never seen. The can kick a goal(field goal) at a right angle to the goal post from like 30 metres away!!! Since Kaeding is injured and when he isn't he misses playoff fg's maybe we should consider sending scouts to australia to find a good kicker! I bet even kicker money in the nfl is more the the best footy players make.

Hell while we're at it we might consider looking for receivers or te too. The guys jump up as high as i've ever seen our receivers jump!!!

The good players in this game have some of the most insane athletic skill sets i've ever seen!

Have you ever heard of Darren Bennett? That's where we got him from.

These guys aren't as insanely athletic as you think. I doubt any of them could make it in the NFL.

Did you read my post? I referenced former bolts punter darren bennet.
I said as a punter or kicker or maybe receiver since they have to run around for 80 minutes straight.

I think we had a punter that used to play Aussie rules football, his name was Darren Bennett. He owns a small chain of sports haircut salons, and the gals that work there all wear low-cut referee shirts. Best 25 bucks that I spent on a haircut in a long time...

Pointy :whistling: ( Just a little more around the ears and neck please, a little lower... )

I'm extremely athletic but that often is hindered with pads on. The things I could do with a basketball were not the same as what I could do with pads and a football. #imjustsaying

    Btw, your blog sucks.

    Anyone ever watched Gaelic Football?
    Great game. Great Kickers.

Every 2 years the best 15 Aussie Rules players and the best 15 Gaelic Football players play a two game series known as Compromise Rules, its a hybrid game, they use some of the rules from Aussie Rules and some of the Gaelic Rules. It usually ends up in one big fight, to the point that 5 years ago they were thinking of cancelling the whole thing, look at this

Last night I met a guy from Australia. We made fun of Kiwi accents and he told me to watch Aussie rules. He said I did the best Kiwi accent of someone not from New Zealand that he's ever heard. That's all I have to contribute to this thread.

I'm an Aussie - got season tickets for my Footy team - West Coast Eagles. I read this forum all the time - but as an Aussie, I just don't really have the expertise to post anything of interest.
Aussie rules is a great sport - the comparison to Basketball is because it's a free flowing sport. Got the physicallity of the NFL to some degree.
There have been a few Aussie Rules players to become punters in the NFL once their AFL career has started to wind down - Bennett the most notable, also Saverio Rocca and Ben Graham.
Other than punters, I don't think there is much room for transition from Aussie Rules to NFL. Even place kicking is quite different, becuase in Aussie rules you kick it on the run from a position of holding it yourself (more like a punt). Rugby do have the place kicking duties, so there may be more options there.
Some of the Aussie Rules guys have incredible athletic ability and some have fantastic reflexes /great hands etc, but the positions in the NFL are so specialised. An Aussie Rules player would never have run an NFL route before, so the transition to WR would be very difficult. It's also a different shaped ball which affects it's trajectory - so all these little things would take a lot of time to adjust to.
But if you're looking for a sport to follow in your summer time - I highly recommend Aussie Rules.

I have always enjoyed aussie rules. They used to show it on late night cable when I was a kid. Now that I'm in Australia for the next several months I'm really looking forward to getting to a match.
