EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ---- The Chargers started the season like that big ape hanging off the nearby Empire State Building. They were the intimidating Chargers, the King Kongs of the AFC West and primed to hang with the NFL's elite teams.

But they enter today's contest against the New York Jets having slipped on so many bananas that they have nothing more than a 4-4 record. It has them bunched with other playoff hopefuls instead of letting them beat their chest above the fray.

"Last year at this time we were 5-3," general manager A. J. Smith said. "So we are one game off our mark."</blockquote>
