    Veteran running back visits Chargers
    Written by
    Michael Gehlken

The Chargers, still looking to add a veteran backup to Ryan Mathews, had a visitor Tuesday.

Running back Jackie Battle met with team personnel and toured the Chargers facility as one of four candidates in the mix to join the backfield.

Mike Tolbert, who spelled Mathews the past two seasons, reached a four-year deal with the Panthers on Monday.

Battle, 28, spent the first five years of his career with the Chiefs. The bulk of his playing time came last season when he had 149 carries for 597 yards and two touchdowns. He also had nine catches for 68 yards.

If signed, Battle would be reunited with new Chargers fullback Le’Ron McClain, who spent last year in Kansas City.

Mathews and Curtis Brinkley currently stand as the team's lone running backs. The team is also interested in returning fullback Jacob Hester in a reserve role behind McClain.

Michael Bush must either want stupid money or wants to start. Mystifying.

Yeah I really don't get that one either. Same with why there's no market right now for Garay etc

    BATTLE = WACK

Not only a huge step down from Tolbert, but i'm not convinced he'd be any better than Brinkley, or even LT at this point.

Agreed - can't see why on earth we'd get Battle. I'd much rather have Brinkley or hell bring Hester back as a third RB

I wonder how Tim Hightower's ACL is healing. He's still only 25, that'd be a nice pickup.

AJ said they have 4 backs on the radar. Considering who is out there, who are we thinking? We know Jackie Battle, but who else. I sure hope Michael Bush is on that list. Not sure whom else is out there right now that we would even cosider, especially since they said no to LT.

in all honesty.. I don't see us signing Michael Bush, he most likely could have a bigger role or be a starter for some of the teams he's visited.. Wouldn't mind if we went after these 4 backs to take a few carries but also have a bigger role being a receiving running back

    1. Ryan Grant
    2. BenJarvis Green-Ellis
    3. Kevin Smith
    4. Justin Forsett/Thomas Jones

all coming at the right price of course..

Battle, however will most likely be signed. I don't think anyone's ever visited SD and left yet..

those are the best out in the market right now man. Ryan Grant has struggled in recent years after Starks took over the position. Benjarvis Green Ellis had a disappointing year after his 1,000 yard+ season in '10, but he is still a good red zone runner. Kevin Smith would serve as a very good back up if he can stay healthy. Justin Forsett is a small speedy runner and Thomas Jones brings that veteran experience, but this guy also works out 24/7. He is 33 but his body certainly isn't.

Michael Bush could be a starter in Cleveland, Cincy, and some other places he's also visited.

I doubt we'll see another quality FA RB signing. None of these FA RBs are significantly better than the UDFAs we're going to see available after the draft.

We would have to trade for Grant since he isn't a FA
