Benirschke bears message of hope for hepatitis patients

The former San Diego kicker conquered a near-fatal episode with ulcerative colitis in 1979 and recently overcame another obstacle by winning a prolonged battle with hepatitis C -- a virus that, in its advanced stages, has a 50-50 survival rate.

    Now he's here with a message, and it couldn't be more straightforward: You, too, can overcome a life-threatening disease if you allow yourself to be tested.</blockquote>
