Berman gets call for Chargers opener

Chris Berman has done just about it all during his ESPN career.Even for him, this will be a first.
ESPN announced Wednesday the broadcaster will do the play-by-play for the Chargers' Monday Night Football season opener on Sept. 10 against the Raiders.
Hired in 1979, Berman has gone hand-in-hand with the network's NFL coverage, hosting Sunday NFL Countdown for going-on 28 years. But he's never been in the commentator's booth to call a game.
Berman said he was surprised upon learning of his Oakland assignment.
"I went, 'Wow. Now there's something I hadn't really thought about,'" Berman said in a podcast, part of ESPN's official release. "Of course, I've thought about calling NFL games my whole life, but given what I do and the Sunday duties ... I didn't see it coming."
After Berman was told, word spread.
Sports By Brooks first reported his forthcoming booth debut last week, the news of which drew a mix of jeers and cheers.
Sports Illustrated reporter Richard Deitsch wrote on Twitter last week: "If Chris Berman calls the game, ask yourself if you are being best served as an NFL fan by that assignment."
Berman and ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer, who will provide color commentary, have a warm-up assignment of sorts, hosting a Monday Night Football preseason game Aug. 23 between the Cardinals and Titans.
Berman will still host ESPN's three-hour Countdown show on season-opening Sunday. He'll then fly cross-country for his first regular-season crack at the booth, the second part of a MNF double-header.
The AFC West rivalry game is set for 7:15 p.m. PT.
"It's nice to be surprised after 32 years," Berman said with a laugh. "It really is."
Whadda ya think? Could be fun .... definitely better that Dierdork.

That little Ken doll needs to stick with baseball - and as little of that as possible.

Very cool. I like Berman. I am just glad to see that SD is getting a little love from the east coast bias peeps.

Bad enough this game will take me into the wee hours of the morning, but Berman calling the game may cause nightmares.

ESPN is getting SLAMMED for this move. Berman is a great, not good, but great on set TV personality.

But as a play-by-play guy he sucks. He can't call baseball. From what I hear, he was a disaster on ESPN's golf coverage last week. Probably going to turn the sound down and listen to Josh & Hank on Rock 105.3.

Boomer may be bad at calling baseball and golf, but lets face it, he's really a football guy. I'd have to think he'd be better at this than any of those other sports.

He's a "football guy" for a studio show, NOT play by play. Big difference there. ESPN has other commentators who also call NFL games. Pash (Cardinals) and Wischusen(Jets) also do college football play by play for ESPN. They could have tapped them for this too.

The guy gets to call a couple games....... I fail to see the harm in that.

    I can't imagine it being worse than a Theismann/Kornheiser cluster ****.

Oh, it'll be worse. Theismann couldn't shut up and Kornheiser was completely out of his element.

Throw in the fact that Berman is paired with Trent Dilfer...yeesh...pass me the barf bucket.

Like I said, I'll try to sync up my satellite feed while listening to Josh & Hank on local radio.

I tried that with Buffalo hockey games. One was always too far ahead of the other.

It's something they're giving a guy who has given the network three decades of work as one of their initial talents. Usually we get the C- team for the late game, at least this time it has people talking and maybe will get east coasters to actually pay attention. Honestly I'm kinda looking forward to it, I've always like Berman so I think it'll be amusing.

Seriously, they should just clone Al Michaels enough times to allow all game calls to be done exclusively by his clones.
