Of the defensive players that might be available for the Chargers in round 1 how would you place them from best to worst?

    1) Cam. Jordan
    2) JJ Watt
    3) Ryan Kerrigan
    4) Cam Hayward
    5) Aldon Smith
    6) Akeem Ayers
    7) M. Wilkerson

I believe #4 should be Cam Heyward. ;)

Mixing DE and OLB makes it hard to determine who's "best"...... #imjustsaying

For those players, I think you hit the nail on the head:
    1) Cam. Jordan
He's played in a 3-4, smart, and should get in the backfield more than any other 5T on this list. Will 2008 DUI keep AJ from drafting him?
    2) JJ Watt
Just a step behind Jordan. He'll give the opposing OL a handful. The one thing I don't like about him is that he overpursues, which is a problem common to a lot of Bolts players. Coachable though and he could make an impact day 1.
    3) Ryan Kerrigan
He could be a solid OLB. Needs to develop more pass rushing moves. Foot injury issues.
    4) Cam Hayward
Solid all around player. Effort has been a hit on him. But he's a high character guy, so I think he's going to be a solid NFL DLman.

I'd throw 5) Justin Houston into this mix. Experience at OLB in a 3-4 and has some damn good rush moves. People would call Heyward or Houston a reach at 18, but they woulda called Clay Matthews a reach as well....

I'm not overly excited about the next 2 guys. I wonder if Smith is going to make it as a 3-4 OLB. If Ayers is there at 50, he's worth a shot. Smith is better, but because he ranks out higher as a 4-3 DE than as a 3-4 OLB, he'll get taken far before pick 50.
    6) Aldon Smith
    7) Akeem Ayers

    8) M. Wilkerson--Bust material.

Could we actually be in for back to back beef picks this year?

"Should the Chargers go with an outside linebacker at No. 18, the top-shelf talent at defensive end stretches into at least the second round and could leak into the third. Among those the Chargers could pursue with a late-second or third-round pick is Miami’s Allen Bailey."

How bout best available DE at 18 and Acho at 50? That's what I'm hoping for.

But I'm pretty sure we'll go CB then WR ;)

You sure about Harris? He hasn't had any injuries or anything, so I'm not sure why AJ would be attracted to him smileylaughing002o.gif

Don't worry Miami is AJ's kryptonite. He wont even look at the program or players.

OK....... I'd prefer we took a DE, though the conventional wisdom has us going OLB first. Pass rush is an issue, but so is our interior ability to stop the run. With all our questions at ILB, we need the front center 3 to be as stout as possible. A great DE will also make the OLB's better by freeing them up more.

With that in mind, I'd take J.J. Watt or Cam Jordan over any of the others. Jordan is more of a hybrid DE/OLB with his ability to get at the QB. Watt would be more of a true DE in our system.

Nope!! You take the next best guy on the board no matter what position they play. We have done enough trading up over the last few years, and our special teams have been hurt because of it. Those mid-late round picks that make up most teams special teams, were traded away and our special teams was made up on scrap heap free agents and undrafted players

What's your board in the 1st? I've got (ignoring Jones, Amukamara and all the other guys who'll be gone)
    ----------Round 1------------------
    Cameron Jordan, DE, California
    JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin
    Ryan Kerrigan, OLB Purdue
    Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State
    Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia
    Tyron Smith, OT, USC
    Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
    Anthony Castonzo, OT, BC
    Mike Pouncey, C, Florida
    Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
    Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

I'd go Heyward if Jordan, Watt and Kerrigan are gone. Trade down? Nope. I'd be skeered of someone else grabbing Heyward or Houston before our number came up.

Depends on what we'd have to give up..... if it's only a couple slots to get ahead of New England, it might be worth it.

Fair point. Especially cause the teams just in front of us have similar needs.

Conventional wisdom says that both the Jags and Pats are targeting the same DE/OLB players as the Chargers. If the Jags take Jordan or Watt, the odds are the Pats will take the other.

If only Norv threw that last game like I suggested........ everything would've worked out fine. ;)

I can't understand why the Chargers haven't hired you yet.
The bonus would be improvement to the cheerleading squad. Their game has been suffering since Marlena walked.

Don't the Jags run a 4-3? They need a DE (from everything I just looked up), but what they are looking for from a DE would be different than what we look for in a DE. And the Pats need a OLB more than they need a DE. SO there is a chance that neither team take one of those DE's

Watt can play DE in either scheme.

Ok, I will take your word for it, but you don't see too many 300lb 4-3 DE's. Also, don't be surprised to see the Pats trade back, they do it every year

He could go either way. But he'll stick with at least one of his 1st rounders. I'd bet the first one, following his 'conversion' quote.

Watt's 290 isn't he? Not sure if that's his official combine weight or what, but that's what I'm seeing.

    Looks like he is 290

NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - J.J. Watt

I thought I had seen that he was like 298

Guess you were right about him fitting both schemes:

"Watt is an ideal fit as a strong side 4-3 defensive end but some may like him more as a 3-4 end"

A man must have priorities. The effects of cheerleading are underrated........ they rank just below special teams play in importance. ;)
