I wouldn't expect him to be that high considering they base this partly off team success under their watch. Towers was the GM through the 1999-2003 seasons...

Ratings are relative to how well the previous GM of the team did, AJ was part of the previous management team that he is being compared to. could it be that he is benefitting from some of his own mistakes as assistant GM in this comparison?

Not sure we should be bragging about being a team that is ranked 30 as the NFL team value.

Name me the last time the Padres were in the playoffs two years in a row.

I have a feeling i'll be waiting awhile for a response.

Oh, and please save me the weak division excuses. They've been in playoff contention every year since PetCo has opened.

And, for the record, I don't think Towers is the best GM in the league, but he certainly does not suck. (Especially when it comes to assembling a pitching staff.)

    That's because it has never happened. 1984, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2006 .. That's the Padres playoff history.

I don't equate making the playoffs with mediocrity.

And nothing grinds my gears more than somebody suggesting that I could care less about the World Series (or Superbowl) just because I, heaven forbid, suggest that making the playoffs is a good thing.

It was a rhetorical question to which I knew the answer.

Kevin Towers is responsible for building 4 of the 5 playoff teams in Padres history.

Towers' main fault is that he can't draft...which helped lead to the 1999-2003 fiasco. (Helped because there were other factors involved that wasn't really in his control.)

He's no longer responsible for the draft, though.

Yeah .. I think with Alderson's input, we should see a lot better talent coming out of them. At least I hope..

    Nope

Want to put down some $$$ on where they finish this year?

Towers has managed to trade away some of the best young talent the Padres have. Then he sign's Maddox and Wells. Nice for their last hurrah.

Traded Jason Bay, O. Perez, for Brian Giles?
    Traded Josh Barfield?
Let Bochy ( who I never liked) go to the Giants.
Let Dave Roberts go. To the Giants BTW
Signed the other Giles to replace Barfield ( that give's me 2 to rag on)
    Drafted Bush.

Do I need to go on?

Do I need to say more?

    Seriously?

They trade away good young talent so they can sign old not so good anymore talent.

They made the playoffs back to back for the first time in team history just last year. How long have the Pads existed? Since like '69, right? (i really don't know). And it took almost 40 years for them to make the playoff in cosecutive seasons. THAT IS FVCKING SAD.

I'm sure they'll be competative this season, they'll win some big games and they'll blow some incredibly easy games like they always do. At the end of Sept. they'll be in the hunt for the division, again, and everyone in San Diego will have their Padres fever **** and be talking about how this year they're gonna make it out of the 1st round, ect. ect. ect. Then they'll get PWN3D again by a younger, deeper, and more experienced team. Then everyone will say what a great season they had. Then when free agency starts and the Pads decide to trade Greene or Gonzales everyone will piss and moan for onths. Then KT will sign another over the hill player or 2 and try to squeeze 1 more good year out of them and then everyone will forgive him.

KT sucks. The Moores suck. Pads suck.

Traded Akinori Otsuka and Adam Eaton for Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young.
Traded Dough Mirabelli for Cla Meredith and Josh Bard
Signed Scott Linebrink after the Astros trashed him. (Using him as the centerpiece to represent the many good bullpen arms Towers always seems capable of acquiring.)

Let's see, now let's get to your examples.

Quite possibly the most overblown complaint in the history of sports. While it's true he screwed the pooch on this one it's not like he got garbage in return. True, Brian's power seems to have gone out the window, but he's still a helluva good baseball player and an on base machine.

Of course I'd rather have Bay, but I imagine it was hard to pass up a guy with Brian Giles' resume when all that's being asked in return is a pitcher who bounced up and down from the majors that year and a guy with 4 games of experience at the major league level.

I don't care about Oliver Perez, though, after one good rebound year in Pittsburgh he proceeded to suck.

In retrospect, yeah, bad trade. (But not nearly as bad as Fred McGriff for Melvin Nieves and 2 other scrubs.)

How can you possibly complain about this when we don't know how well Kevin Kouzmanoff will perform yet? You can't, in one post, critisize Towers for trading away an unproven rookie for a guy who was proven to be successful at the major league level, and then follow it up with critisism for trading a proven 2nd baseman for a guy unproven at the major league level.

Kouzmanoff was the minor league player of the year last year and is projected to be really good.

The book is still open on this trade, though.

If you never liked him why do you care?

Eh. Roberts is on the wrong side of 30 and had a career year last season. I would've liked to have him back, but i'm not entirely upset over it.

Book's still open on this one as well.

It was a good signing and M.Giles is certainly capable of holding the position. If Kouzmanoff produces as expected the trade was more than worth it.

I'm already on record for stating Towers isn't good in the draft, but people complain about this draft pick like as though Towers drafted his son that nobody knew about.

Matt Bush, a high schooler, was projected to go in the top half of the first round, but not 1st overall.

It was a reach, but not as big of one that everyone makes it out to be.

Bush certainly isn't helping matters by not doing too well in the minors, though.

Same ol same ol, read my last post.

While this may be true, it has nothing to do with Kevin Towers and his ability to put together a team. Please stay on topic. The Chargers don't have an illustrious history either, does that make AJ Smith a horrible GM?

    Fixed it for you.

Lame prediction. One that can be made in reference to the Chargers as well.

And hoards of others will completely blow it off like as though the playoffs mean nothing. (I don't predict the "pwn3ge" though)

It's funny you bring up Adrian Gonzalez. Who did we trade for him again? Didn't Chris Young come in that package? But yeah, Towers sux0rs!

And the Padres will be in the playoffs again and you'll remind us how little that matters.

I don't know how you can state "Pads suck" and call yourself a fan. :icon_shrug:
