For two years in college and two years with the Chargers, linebacker Shaun Phillips practiced across from Drew Brees but was never allowed to touch him. But when the Bolts and Saints meet Sunday, Brees won’t be wearing a red practice jersey, and Phillips is looking forward to Brees being fair game.

“I’m excited because I never got a chance to hit Drew,” Phillips said. “I always use to joke around by saying ‘I’m going to get a hit on you one day’. This is going to be the first time that I get an opportunity to get a chance to hit him.”

Phillips said that if he reaches Brees, he’ll surely have some words for his good friend, and getting to Brees could say a lot about how Sunday’s game plays out.

In last week’s loss to Buffalo, Bills quarterback Trent Edwards sat comfortably in the pocket as he completed 25-of-30 throws for 261 yards. Edwards got rid of the ball quickly and wasn’t sacked in Buffalo’s win.

“It’s something we’ve talked about a lot this week,” linebacker Marques Harris said. “We’ve got to create pressure. Since I’ve been here, we’ve always been a team that can get to the quarterback. We have to find a way.”

Brees is not an easy guy to get to. The Saints have allowed just 10 sacks this season, tied for fourth fewest in the NFL. In 2007, they gave up just 16 sacks all year, the lowest total in the league. The Chargers believe that has some to do with protection and some to do with the fact the Brees is a smart quarterback who gets the ball out quickly.

“He knows where he’s going with the ball before the ball’s even snapped,” Phillips said.

With rushers like Phillips, Harris and defensive end Luis Castillo, opponents have regularly made it a priority to get rid of the ball quickly, which limits the ability of a defense to create pressure. However, Castillo acknowledges that the Bolts need to take advantage of the chances they do receive.

“There is always going to be those one, two or three plays where he’s going to hold the ball for a while,” Castillo said. “We’ve got to be able to get there.”

Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner believes his team has blitzed an adequate number of times this season but would like to see his defenders do a better job when their number is called.

“A lot of pass rush, people think it’s scheme, certainly it is,” Turner said. “We’re trying to create scheme. We did a lot of different things (against Buffalo), but ultimately, someone has to beat someone. That’s what we’re trying to get done.”

The Chargers have 17 sacks this season to rank eighth in the NFL. Last season, they were fifth in the league in sacks. They could get a boost should Jyles Tucker return after missing two games with a hamstring injury.

“It’s killed me not being out there,” said Tucker, who has three sacks on the season. “I’ve got to get back on the field and try to make some plays to help this defense. Hopefully that happens Sunday.”

First and foremost, I don't want to see Breeser getting carted off the field but a good old *** kicking I'm all for.

OK Norv... if it ain't scheme, and you have QB's getting rid of the ball quickly to avoid the rush, then why are the DB's not in man coverage? Our secondary (and LB'ers) SUCK at playing zone. Jammer has ALWAYS been more effective in man coverage. I get tired of seeing them lined up 10 yards off the WR. At least in man coverage, the other team has to work harder to earn their yards...

AHA! Now I understand all his recent statements about wanting to tackle Brees.

And our long-term defensive plan would be to leave him there.
