SAN DIEGO -- The NFL trade deadline is a thing of the past; Donnie Edwards' tenure with the Chargers is not.

The team did not deal the starting inside linebacker Tuesday ---- the last day trades could be completed ---- bringing to a close a saga that took months to play out.

"There was no action; It was very quiet leading up to the deadline," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said.</blockquote>

That was as specific as Smith would get. Asked why a deal involving Edwards never materialized, he responded with his usual refrain.

"I'm not talking about Donnie Edwards as of July 31," he said.</blockquote>
