SAN DIEGO -- Count special teams among the many things the San Diego Chargers will work to improve on this offseason.

[IMG]The Chargers ranked 29th in the special teams rankings annually produced by longtime Dallas Morning News NFL reporter Rick Gosselin. The league's 32 teams are ranked in 22 categories and assigned points according to their standing -- one for best, 32 for worst.

The Philadelphia Eagles led the special teams rankings, followed by the Buffalo Bills. The AFC champion New England Patriots were third and the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks tied for 17th.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said finding a return specialist will be a priority again this offseason. San Diego finished No. 22 in the NFL in kick returns, averaging 22.2 yards a return. Kicker Nick Novak's 22.2 percent on touchbacks was the worst in the league.

The Chargers ranked 21st in 2013.

29th is not acceptable. A big reason for this is Nick Novak's worst in the league for touchbacks.

Is training Scifres to do kickoffs a possibility? I mean, plenty of other teams employ the punter as a kickoff specialist, and Scifres certainly has a big enough leg.

Haven't they tried Scifres there before?

Don't think it's that big of deal that Novak can't generate more touchbacks.

Wouldn't you think TT would of known this before giving him that contract last year?

No, but I think they pulled a switch when Novak had to punt because Scifres was injured.

Frequent here, just hardly ever post. But yes, I do think its a big deal that our Kicker cant generate more touchbacks. Just look at the Bmore game for example. Since it appears Novak's max distance on kickoffs is 1 yard deep into the endzone (2 on a really good day) we pretty much squibbed the ball all game that resulted in their starting position at around the 40yd line. For the most part our Defense held up with the field position and turnovers we had that game, but I would like to have a kicker that can get it at least 5 yards deep if not out the back of the endzone consistently.
