SAN DIEGO – The Chargers still plan on signing a defensive tackle, likely by tomorrow's practice, to fill the void left by Jamal Williams being placed on injured reserve.

It may well be Alfonso Boone, who took a physical and worked out for the Chargers but did not sign a contract Monday.

Boone, an eight-year veteran, was released by the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the season.

Sources said the team plans to sign one of two players, though the second possibility remains a mystery.

Whatever happens with reinforcements, the current Chargers feel they need to play better to stop the run, especially early in games.

“They've been coming out and giving it to us right from giddyup,” linebacker Stephen Cooper said. “As a defense, we have to soul search and see what kind of guys really want to play this game. We got pushed around too much in the first half. We've got to establish the kind of defense we want; that's physical and up-tempo.”

A week after the Raiders gained 91 yards on their first 16 rushes against the Chargers, the Ravens gained 85 yards on their first 17 rushes. The Chargers fixed their overpursuit and missed tackles in both games, allowing Oakland just 57 yards on its final 16 runs and Baltimore 45 yards on its final 15 runs.

“We have to start the game off fast, with a lot more intensity,” Cooper said. “We can't let teams dictate the tempo of the game in the beginning.”

I'm glad he is saying WE... because he is part of this. I don't understand how they are coming out flat, but they are and it has to stop.

I think KA tweeted that Boone will not be the one to sign a contract.

Please not Boone, no more DTs that are 300lbs or under, they can't be nose tackles in this defense
