The Detroit Lions have agreed to send cornerback Dre' Bly to the Denver Broncos in exchange for running back Tatum Bell and tackle George Foster. Trades cannot become official until Friday, the first day of the league year.

    Bly

Bly, a two-time Pro Bowl performer who earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1999 St. Louis Rams, did not fit well in the Tampa 2 defensive scheme employed by second-year head coach Rod Marinelli and new defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Thus the Lions granted Bly and his agent, Kennard McGuire, permission to seek a trade two weeks ago.

The New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and Washington Redskins also were in the running for the 29-year-old Bly.

Neither Bly nor McGuire was available for comment.

In Denver, Bly will join Champ Bailey in forming one of the game's top cornerback tandems. The Broncos needed a replacement for Darrent Williams, who was killed in a drive-by shooting after a New Year's Eve party in Denver.

Bly is considered one of the game's best big-play cornerbacks. In eight seasons he has intercepted 31 passes, forced 17 fumbles, and scored eight touchdowns (five interception returns, two fumble returns, one punt return). Last season Bly tied for the team lead with three interceptions and led the Lions with 18 passes defended and four forced fumbles.

I disagree. I think Bly is overrated. He takes too many chances, doesn't play the run and is on the downside of his career.

If it was the Rams version of Bly I would be concerned. The Lions version not so much.

People just keep letting the Donkies **** them in trades. Millen is a moron. Bell and Foster were potential cuts, and neither one of them was worth more than a mid round pick. How do those two losers equal the value of Dre Bly?

because Matt Millen is an idiot

Ironically enough there's some rationale in this because it fills two holes the Lions need
THey needed a RT since Kelly BUtler sucked
They needed another RB because Jones hasn't been playing well, is injured.
Bell's a proven back and is talented, Foster is a good RT, nothing too special but solid (think Vaughn Parker).

BUT Bly's a very good corner

Wait a second, I havnt heard anyone mention how this might affect the status of Michael Turner getting signed by the Donkos.

They dont have an RB now, whats to stop them from giving him a fatty contract?

I'm with ya. He's got skills, no doubt, but he's not an imposing guy and I'm not terribly concerned about this aquisition. But if he gets the ball in his hands in the open field, don't blink, dood can boogy.

Yeah but dont you think Burner would be worth the risk? Especially for the Broncos, he would rush for 2000 in that system.

Matt Millen would draft him first if he was a wide receiver.

    Truly.

Thats one thing about Denver we love...........busy off seasons. Its pretty much never boring here.

Gotta say though, AJ has put together the most complete team in the NFL at this moment. Only thing I dont think Turner is a help, but a hinder.

It's time to face the fact that Michael Turner will never be a Donk. And if by some chance Denver decided that a first and a third were worth it, then it would give us some serious ammo come draft day with 6 day one picks.

No, Bly is still a good man-to-man cover corner. This is bad news for us. The defenses that give us the most trouble are those with two good corners; the DC leaves them alone against our receivers, the LB's and safeties can concentrate on taking away Gates and passes in the flat to LT. The Raiders do that very well, as did Washington in '05.

It wouldn't surprise me if Shanahan was thinking of us when he pulled this trade off.
