Another veteran player has switched teams as the NFL draft inches closer.

    Dewayne Robertson

    Robertson

The New York Jets traded defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Denver Broncos on Thursday. The compensation to the Jets is a conditional 2009 draft choice, believed to be a midround pick, dependent upon Robertson's playing time.

"It's a great opportunity," said agent Hadley Engelhard, who's hoping to finalize a new deal for Robertson with the Broncos on Friday, according to The Associated Press. "He's got the chance to showcase his abilities."

The two teams have been talking about a trade since mid-March. Earlier this month, New York gave Denver permission to talk to Robertson about a new contract and the two sides had agreed on a restructured contract. Yet the Broncos and Jets continued to plow toward agreeing on a compensation package and came to an accord Thursday.

Robertson joins defensive end Jared Allen and cornerback Pacman Jones as veterans who were traded this week for draft picks.

This is the second time the Jets have agreed to trade Robertson this offseason. In March, they had a deal in principle with Cincinnati for fourth- and fifth-round picks. But Robertson failed the Bengals' physical because of a knee issue. The Broncos gave Robertson a physical in March and the team was satisfied with his knees since he played all last season without any major problems.

Robertson will join second-year player Marcus Thomas as the likely starting defensive tackles in Denver as it retools its defensive line for the third time in four years. Robertson was made expendable by the Jets because he doesn't fit in the team's 3-4 scheme.

Had the Jets not been able to deal Robertson, he likely would have been cut in June. He was due a $3 million bonus in June and has salary cap number of about $11 million for this season. Robertson, 26, was the No. 4 overall draft pick in the 2003 draft out of Kentucky. He had 57 tackles for the Jets last season.

Getting that D back little by little :)

Denver has a history of bringing in injury retreads and deadbeats. Your own post said Denver is retooling the line for the 3rd time in 4 years. It's too late for Denver to be competitive this year. Too many personnel mistakes. Too many holes to fill. You need a new head coach but it's too late in the year for that. Just look at your draft success. Denver is next to last. :hilarious:

Hahahaha! I guess that the rat still doesn't trust his ability to draft anyone good, so he continues to go get crappy players that other teams don't want. Robertson, MEcree, Manuel, Boss Bailey, and Koutouvides, these guys are horrible, and they're supposed to turn around that crappy defense?

This is the Courtney Brown situation all over again.

A tremendously overpaid high DL draft pick who will amount to nothing in the NFL.

If KC can do anything with that butt load of draft picks they have, they may be a force sooner than Denver.

Yeah, you get tired of hearing the same music box time after time. Now we can kick them down the field to a different tune.

I actually think this is a good move for the Broncos, and bad for us.

Robertson is only 26 years old and can still play. This is a different situation than the other veteran D-Linemen they've added in the past.

anyone can be a 26 year old D lineman that can still play, but the level he plays at is not high at all so why would it be bad for us? this guy hasnt shown anyone anything

Lets examine what your team has besides the former no. 4 overall pick who was an underachiever in NJ.

a former pot smoker at DE from Florida coming off a serious broken leg

a former pot buddy of the pot smoker who is also a serious pot smoker at DT from Florida who is untested and so far unspectacular

a former DE from Texas, notorious for their underachiver status who can't beat Philip Rivers to the end zone in a foot race.

Nice defensive line, I say if they get 20 sacks in 08 it will be a miracle! Bring em on!
