Broncos emerge as candidate for Lewis
Ray Lewis | Ravens | Interested: Broncos? Cowboys? Jets?
While the Baltimore Ravens have feverishly tried to retain linebacker Ray Lewis over the last few weeks, his name has been linked in various sources to both the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. Amid the smoldering chaos as the league has finally entered the opening day of free agency, a darkhorse candidate out west has emerged according to the Baltimore Sun: the Denver Broncos.

Lewis and nascent Broncos defensive coordinator Mike Nolan worked together when Nolan had the same position with the Ravens, and according to the Sun, the two would meet one-on-one on a weekly basis to work on game-plans. In addition, the Broncos have been cutting dead weight since the promotion of general manager Brian Xanders, and the team is expected to be around $30 million under the salary cap. Lewis would be a solid tackling machine in the middle of the field as well as a vocal leader as the team installs Nolan's schemes.

    1. Where the hell are the getting the cheese to sign these dudes?
    2. When will AJ realized that when you want to play with the big boys, you need to go get the big boys via FA?
    3. I'm an AJ fan and appreciate his efforts. My biggest problem is his lack to action in FA year in and out.

A few scrubs and a couple old All-Pro players that will be a year older playing a mile above sea-level.

Rivers will still pimp that ***.

Dawkins still has some gas in the tank and Gafney will be a good #3 behind Royal and Marshal. If they get Ray Lewis then we need a gameplan. Remember they almost won the division.

Broncos are improving. They need a good RB attack for that offense. Dawkins is old, like Champ Bailey. They will get tired late in the season.

AJ needs to get off his *** and do something between now and draft day.

'06, '07, '08 should have been our years to at least win 2 SB's.

Looks like the Broncos are desperate, they just signed a bunch of overrated players.

Dawkins is immediately the best safety in the AFC West and definitely has something in the tank. Only way this would not be bad is if, as RTL mentioned, its for a lot of money.

Gaffney is a nice addition and gives the Broncos four decent receivers

At least their RBs still blow

but they moved fast to grab some need positions

Whatever. Everyone knows that we are the only team that knows how to win a Superbowl, and that's by continually ignoring one of the two ways to improve your team in the off season. But hurry up LT!!! Restructure now!!!!!!!! There are a ton of free agents out there we need to not pay with the money we'll save!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dawkins is still one of the best safeties in the NFL, though durability is a question. Either way, he's already the leader of that team, and he will have an impact on their defense. Lest people forget, we were far from miles ahead of the Donks last year, and a move here or there could put them ahead of a team that is comfortable in standing pat and assuming that players will improve over the offseason.

Yes because signing overrated players will fix a team, it doesn't matter that they're overrated as long as you're signing someone to make it look like you're improving (Raiders).

Signing FAs can work, if you sign impact guys to a quality deal, unfortunately that's easier said than done.

Dawkins may end up being the best safety in the division but that isn't saying much. That's like saying we were the best pass rushing team in the division last season (I didn't check so I could be wrong).

Well I think Dawkins will bring so much intensity and heart to Denver's terrible defense. That alone makes them that much more frightening and then we have to remember that he's a playmaker, a damn good one. He's arguably the second best safety in the league and will be a handful for our boys if he truly is going to Denver. But I have yet to hear this confirmed. Even ESPN is calling it a prelimanary report out of the Than Franthithco Chronicle HQ. He's apparently en route and his agent is incredibly close to a deal which is probably why Dawkins is flying out, gotta have a presser for that guy.

They're scrubs, right? Well maybe not Buckhalter but he's no Michael Turner and will find playing for Denver more difficult than playing for Philly. But he's good and COULD be a top ten RB depending on where he plays. Denver could be just the place for him. This could be good for the Broncos. As far as Arrington, 3rd string RB in Arizona...not all that special, a sleeper - I guess but let's hope he keeps sleeping.

As far as the others Hill will probably help out more than McCree did and Gaffney is still a bit of a threat, just look at how he burned us a few times in the 2008 AFC Championship. But he's nothing more than a 3rd WR.

You mean like the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys? You mean like the Jacksonville Jaguars were last year?

I just love dumb comments about the importance of free agency. Look at the last few SB winners and tell me how many big money free agents they signed. Signing large numbers of big name guys does not work. You overpay to get them. You can't retain your homegrown talent. And teams that bring in free agents like the Broncos are doing typically lack chemistry and cohesion.

Dawkins is a big name. Will he make them better next year? Probably. But what about the year after that and the year after that when Dawkins is over the hill and the Broncos are overpaying him to the point where they can't retain their own talent.

As for the rest of the guys on the list, they're just a bunch of names.

We still own the Broncos. They only almost won the division because the Bolts had an off year.
