Browns trade Brady Quinn to Denver

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2010 5:06 PM ET
Brady Quinn is on the way to Denver.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that Quinn was just traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Denver Broncos in exchange for Peyton Hillis and two conditional draft picks.

We've known since the Browns acquired quarterbacks Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme that Quinn was on the way out, and now we know that he's gone.

The question now is whether he'll be the starter in Denver.

Broncos, Browns announce Brady Quinn trade

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2010 5:32 PM ET
Shortly after Jay Glazer of Fox Sports broke the story, the Browns and Broncos formally announced that they've reached an agreement on a trade that will send quarterback Brady Quinn from Cleveland to Denver.

The Broncos' announcement said the team gave up fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional 2012 draft pick to the Browns for Quinn. Assuming Hillis and Quinn pass their physicals, the trade is a done deal.

Most of the space in the Browns' announcement was devoted to touting the acquisition of Hillis, noting that he played in 28 games with eight starts in his two years with the Broncos and had 81 carries for 397 yards and six touchdowns.

But the real news is about Quinn, who was praised on the way out by Browns coach Eric Mangini.

"I appreciate everything Brady did for us last year and in his three seasons with the Cleveland Browns," Mangini said. "He is professional in the way he goes about doing his job and worked extremely hard at every aspect of his game. I wish him the best of success in Denver."

Last year the Browns could have had Jay Cutler for Brady Quinn. This year they got two late-round picks and Peyton Hillis.

No offense but this could kinda suck. You see we have never really seen Quinn play well because he was..well...with the Browns. He is going to a team with an offensive line and a running game now. He might surprise some people.

Not saying he will, just saying he might do better than expected is all.

No matter who, what, when, where or why ... the one constant in the universe as of late is that the Broncos will suck.

Brady Quinn medicine woman is another shining example of the suckage factor.

Klis: Orton will still be the starter in Denver

Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2010 8:44 PM ET
With former first-round pick Brady Quinn now shipped from Cleveland to Denver, there's a question as to whether Quinn or Kyle Orton will be the starting quarterback for the Broncos.

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the new guy won't supplant the holdover; per Klis, Orton will start.

Though Orton's status could change, the decision makes sense, for a couple of reasons. First, Orton is a restricted free agent, tendered at the first-round level. His base salary is $2.62 million, nearly four times greater than Quinn's $700,000 compensation.

Then there's the fact that Quinn will unlock $5.9 million in 2011 escalators if he takes 70 percent or more of the snaps on offense this season. By making him the backup, the Broncos are guaranteed to get two seasons out of him at a total payout of a paltry, relatively speaking, $1.4 million.

For the Browns, the move closes the books on one of the worst recent trades since the Cowboys pillaged the Vikings in exchange for Herschel Walker more than 20 years ago. Cleveland gave up a high second-round pick in 2007 and a first-round pick in 2008 for the ability to pick Quinn. To the extent that anyone is still interested in trading for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, that price tag should be kept in mind.

Does McDumbass have a special machine that can fuse 2 QBs into an elite one? Or does he have the same fetish for QB collecting that Gruden had?

This move really doesn't make any sense from either perspective, but hey, who am I to argue with the Donks making a dumb move? :)

Quinn never got a fair shake in Cleveland with that messed up group and now goes on to be stuck behind Orton. Wow this makes for a moronic situation even with a low price.

Oh, so you mean a Tom Brandstater and a "Orton Hears A Who" still doesn't match a medicine woman...
