On Sunday, Chargers linebacker Kevin Burnett will look across the field at his former team, the Dallas Cowboys. He’s no doubt excited about the opportunity, but he’s choosing his words very carefully this week.

Kevin Burnett[IMG] has had Sunday’s game circled on his calendar since the NFL released its 2009 schedule in April. He knew when he signed with the Chargers in March that he’d get to face his former team, and he can’t wait for the matchup.
But just days before the Chargers travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys team with which Burnett spent the first four seasons of his career, the Tennessee graduate was silent when reporters approached him Thursday. He’d said earlier in the week that he didn’t “want to give anyone any ammunition,” and he’s stuck to it.
While he’ll choose another week to talk about it, Burnett’s first season in San Diego has brought about an increased role for him and in turn been his best of his five-year NFL career. Despite missing three games with a high ankle sprain, he’s already established new career highs in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss. He’s been the team’s leading tackler in three games.
While Brandon Siler[IMG] and Tim Dobbins[IMG] have seen plenty of action throughout the season, Burnett has started seven games and been a fixture in the team’s sub packages on defense. His athleticism has been a welcomed addition. Burnett has played a key role in a pass defense that ranks eighth in the NFL after finishing 31st a year ago.
“We needed a cover linebacker, a guy that was good in space,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “We were struggling. We have some real physical guys but I’m not sure we had that type of player in our group of linebackers. He’s brought that dimension to us. His presence has been very good for us when people try to spread us out in our nickel package.”
Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera lauded Burnett’s explosiveness, and Turner also credited Burnett for an energy that he’s brought to San Diego.
“He’s gotten a couple game balls from us,” Turner said. “He missed a couple games with an injury but he came roaring back and has played awfully well since he’s been back.”
Earlier this season, Burnett followed the same silent approach prior to the Chargers matchup with the Miami Dolphins. Miami V.P. of Football Operations Bill Parcells was the head coach in Dallas when the Cowboys drafted Burnett, and Burnett let his play do the speaking that week. He led the Chargers with 14 tackles, one for loss, and a sack in a Chargers victory.
This week he’s preparing to play against even more familiar faces, and he’s hoping the same routine will yield the same results.

It would be sweet to see Burnett get his first pick of **** in a big spot in the 4th quarter to win one for us! If he has half the monster game he had against Miami we will be in business. When they try and bang us with Barber we got our Thumpers in Siler and Dobbins, when its Tashard Choice or Felix Jones hopefully Burnett can hold down the fort.

I hope Rivera has something good cooked up for ****!!!:abq2:

Charger football needs to be clearly defined to a national audience this Sunday. Rivera may pull out some new wrinkles this week like he did against Indy last year.

Just win the football game is all I care about.:icon_toast:

That is honestly the only thing I am worried about.

We are already the #1 team in the NFL against the deep ball, and our rush defense improved from #28 to #21 since our D-line rotation began (a huge jump, translating to playing above-average rush defense since it was instituted)

But Burnett/English/Cooper vs. Witten will be a prominent matchup...show us what ya got, Coop! :abq1:

    Careful with the words

What Kevin Burnett, fresh from the adrenaline of a victory, said Sunday in Cleveland, well aware a reporter was listening: “They’re going to have to strap me down next week.”

So he’s clearly excited to return to Dallas, where he spent the first four years of his career before signing as a free agent with the Chargers this offseason.

What Burnett said yesterday about playing the Cowboys: “Ask me after the game. I’m not giving anybody ammunition.”

I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry about that from Burnett. He's probably REALLY focused on this game, just hoping he doesn't get too hyped up. Just play the game man.
