Chargers lose Donald Butler for season
Inside linebacker suffered elbow dislocation Sunday vs. Broncos
    By Michael Gehlken

A rocky season for Donald Butler is over.

The Chargers inside linebacker suffered a dislocated left elbow Sunday against the Broncos, coach Mike McCoy said Monday. Butler was placed on injured reserve. Cornerback Greg Ducre was promoted to the 53-man roster, and quarterback Brad Sorensen was added to the practice squad in corresponding moves.

On the field, Butler had an adverse year.

It defied what the Chargers believed to be his career trajectory this offseason when signing him to a contract worth up to $51.8 million over seven years.

The 2010 third-round draft pick from Washington missed his rookie season to a torn Achilles'. He developed over the next two years alongside veteran Takeo Spikes and, after Spikes' departure, set out to fill a leadership role.

Teammates voted Butler a defensive captain before the 2013 season. He was their every-down inside linebacker during it, playing in the base, nickel and dime packages. He finished second on the team in tackles despite missing four starts with a groin injury.

The Chargers rewarded him in late February.

His contract essentially was two deals in one, the first a three-year, $19.8 million pact that includes an $11.15 million signing bonus. San Diego has an option for an additional four years worth $32 million and must exercise it within five days after the Super Bowl played in early 2017.

Butler had a disappointing 2014 season.

Before it, Butler was not voted a captain. The 26-year-old struggled early in the year and began declining local interviews when those struggles attracted media attention. His role on the field proceeded to decline, moving from a three-down linebacker to one working strictly in the base defense over the past four games. Due to his decreased playing time, the coaching staff removed the game-day speaker from his helmet; he no longer relayed plays from the sideline to teammates in the huddle.

"He's one of the guys that anchors our defense in the middle," defensive end Corey Liuget said Monday. "I'm sad to see that happen to him. It was just an unfortunate situation for him."

Butler was injured in the second quarter.

It occurred on a short C.J. Anderson run near the goal line. Butler popped Peyton Manning on the play when the Broncos quarterback attempted to block him, but the injury came after, not during, the exchange, McCoy said.

Butler did not return to the game.

He exited the stadium with his left arm in a sling.

It says that Kavell Conner will be the starting ILB along side Manti Te'o.
He can not be much worse, probably an upgrade considering Butlers play.

Conner is a little inconsistent, but he is always in on tackles and does make a few plays.

At this stage pretty much anybody is better than Butler...

Having said that I do of course wish him a speedy recovery, we will need him in 2015 to play something like we know he is capable of.

I wish him a speedy recovery as well and hope he is doing well

Having said that, if this had happened in week 1 the season might've gone better

Connor and Gachkar to carry the load. Both have looked good this year and much better than Butler. I can't believe he got hurt trying to get off Manning's block, that is laughable.

Hope he gets fixed in the off season and comes prepared to make a difference inn 2015... because he certainly didn't earn his paycheck this year. Funny but between him and Teo we got a full season out of them. For a system that counts on strong ILBs, both of these guys really let the team down.

I only wish that Conner would lose those f*cking yellow gloves. It always looks like its a pair of penalty flag when he's on the field.
