Getting to 53 - Chargers roster prediction
    CBS Rapid Reports
    Aug. 28, 2011 - by Dan McLellan

    Chargers roster prediction: QBs
In: (2) Philip Rivers, Billy Volek. Out: Scott Tolzien. Analysis: To provide depth on the roster at the WR position the Chargers will go with only two QBs. Tolzien, an undrafted free agent, has been above average for a rookie of his stature but has not been a tremendous standout. He can be placed on the practice squad without a great deal of fear he will be claimed by another team.

    Chargers roster prediction: RBs
In: (4) Jacob Hester (FB), Ryan Mathews, Jordan Todman, Mike Tolbert. Out: Curtis Brinkley, Rogers Dean (FB), Shawnbrey McNeal, Isaac Odim, Brandon Sullivan, Frank Summers (FB). Analysis: Todman will replace Darren Sproles (Saints), the only offensive starter not back from the 2010 season. Todman and Hester will likely see limited opportunities as third down backs. Mathews (50 percent) and Tolbert (40 percent) will get the ball the majority of running plays.

    Chargers roster prediction: WRs
In: (7) Seyi Ajirotutu, Vincent Brown, Patrick Crayton, Malcom Floyd, Richard Goodman, Vincent Jackson, Bryan Walters. Out: Vidal Hazelton, Cameron Kenney, Travon Patterson, Laurent Robinson, Kelley Washington. Analysis: Why seven? Brown (third round, 82nd overall) will be protected on the roster where he can mature after missing two weeks of camp with a sore hamstring. Walters played his way on and may return punts while providing depth. Goodman, perhaps the fastest man on the team, will be a special teams specialist as a kick returner and a gunner. The leaves no room for veteran Washington.

    Chargers roster prediction: TEs
In: (3) Antonio Gates, Randy McMichael, Kory Sperry. Out: Charles Davis, Brad Taylor. Analysis: There are no surprises here. Gates, who suffered a debilitating torn plantar fascia injury last season, will start the year nearly completely healthy. McMichael and Sperry will provide excellent depth at the position.

    Chargers roster prediction: OL
In (8): Jeromey Clary, Kris Dielman, Brandyn Dombrowski, Tyronne Green, Nick Hardwick, Marcus McNeill, Scott Mruczkowski, Louis Vasquez. Out: Colin Baxter, Hutch Eckerson, Michael Huey, Ryan Otterson, Steve Schilling, Bo Thran, Eric Young. Analysis: There will be no new faces on the OL. The versatile play of Dombrowski and Green provides depth with their ability to play just about anywhere on the line. Undrafted free agent Baxter and Schilling (sixth round, 201st overall pick) will likely make the practice squad.

    Chargers roster prediction: DL
In (8): Luis Castillo, Jacques Cesaire, Antonio Garay, Carl Ihenacho, Corey Liuget, Vaughn Martin, Ogemdi Nwagbuo, Cam Thomas. Out: Mike Blanc, Charlie Bryant, Damik Scafe. Analysis: Liuget (round one, 18th overall) has improved every week and may challenge Cesaire for the starting job sooner than later. Martin, who leads the team with three preseason sacks, is vastly improved. Ihenacho, an undrafted free agent, has quietly had an excellent camp.

    Chargers roster prediction: LBs
In (9): Antwan Barnes, Kevin Bentley, Donald Butler, Larry English, Darryl Gamble, Travis LaBoy, Jonas Mouton, Shaun Phillips, Takeo Spikes. Out: Bront Bird, Stephen Cooper (likely to IR), Andrew Gachkar, Jeremy Leman, Kion Wilson. Analysis: Cooper, who tore his right bicep from the bone, will likely go on the IR list. Bentley, who was signed as an insurance policy, will take Cooper’s spot. Gamble, an undrafted free agent, has played his way onto the roster and is needed for depth at the OLB position.

    Chargers roster prediction: DBs
In (9): Antoine Cason, Marcus Gilchrist, Steve Gregory, Quentin Jammer, Bob Sanders, Darrell Stuckey, C.J. Wallace, Eric Weddle, Shareece Wright. Out: Ramon Broadway, Stephen Harrison, Dante Hughes, Nick Polk, Traye Simmons, Quinton Teal. Analysis: Hughes, Polk, and Teal are victims of the numbers. Space had to be made on the roster after the Chargers drafted two CBs (Gilchrist and Wright) and signed veterans Wallace and Sanders. Wallace was questionable to make the team, but has played well and will replace Teal who missed most of preseason with an injury.

    Chargers roster prediction: Special Teams
In (3): David Binn, Nate Kaeding, Mike Scifres. Out: Ricky Schmitt, Mike Windt. Analysis: There are no surprises here. Binn, who suffered a torn hamstring last season in Week 1 against the Chiefs, will return for his 18th and likely final year of his career. Binn is in the final year of his contract. He is the longest tenured Charger and the only man remaining from the 1994 Super Bowl team.

The only argument I might make is Dante Hughes. He seems like he might stick.

Yeah, I just mentioned it elsewhere but will say it again. McLellan has us keeping 5 safeties, I think we keep 4 safeties and 5 CBs, the last of which should be Hughes. Also, Carl Ihenacho is a former San Jose State DE learning how to play 3-4 OLB on the Chargers *NOT* DE - (this despite what it says on the roster over at Chargers.com). I have a couple of other problems with Dan's list - but generally agree with the *big* exception there is simply no freaking way we are keeping 8 defensive linesmen and most assuredly Ihenacho won't be one of them. :D

Edited for clarity - don't get me wrong - I *like* Ihenacho and am hoping to see him passed through waivers and signed to the PS as an OLB

Who wrote this?. This guy know his stuff. Like a couple of guys above the only thing I disagree with is the Dante Hughes cut. Ihenacho might end up on the PS, but I'd be surprised to see him make the 53. Other than that I'd like to know who he thinks make the PS other than Tolzien, Baxter and Schilling (Gachkar will be one, maybe Broadway, Ihenacho, Odim...). Love that this guy has spotted Wallace. I've seen some real good stuff out of him this preseason.

Looks about right. Think Hughes makes it, I Like Nachos will hopefully make it to the PS, and while I think it's crazy we may very well keep 7 receivers on this squad. At some point in time, you stop worrying about what position they play and just keep playmakers no matter what they do.

This whole Vincent Brown thing just stinks. I hate that we have to cut Washington to keep him.

Why borrow angst? How many have been cut so far? the Chargers usually do well in recent history of holding on to players we can use, be that cracking their ankles and putting them on IR (yes I jest), or the practice squad....

    Damn right! :D

Anyway I see Tutu and Goodman as one in the same. Cut one of them (or PS) and keep Washington.

Why all the love for Washington? He's a good SP player and a decent depth WR, but he's hardly a world beater. There's not that much daylight between any of those three guys.

Wow, I thought this list was good, but I knew it wouldn't be perfect. I certainly did not expect the first place it would be wrong would be at long snapper. Sorry to see our last part from the 94 team leaving.

Yup, but it couldn't last forever. He was great for so long.
