Defensive end Jacques Cesaire missed yesterday's practice with recurring soreness in his calf, a flare-up of the injury that sidelined him the entire preseason.

Still, head coach Norv Turner remained optimistic Cesaire will play against the Oakland Raiders in Monday's season opener.

“I'm counting on and am hopeful he'll be able to play,” Turner said.

Cesaire returned to practice last week after missing three weeks and all four exhibition games. He is Monday's presumed starter at right defensive end, though Turner saw the upside in Cesaire having missed so much time — Vaughn Martin and Ogemdi Nwagbuo were able to take more preseason snaps.

“We've played a lot of guys there in his place,” Turner said. “I'm hopeful Jacques would play. If not, we have guys that can go in there, and I feel good about it.”

    No fine this time

Sources said Turner talked to cornerback Antonio Cromartie but did not fine him for posting some pictures from the defensive backs' meeting room on his Twitter account this week.

Cromartie was tweeting from inside the Chargers building, which Turner has prohibited, but it was well after most teammates had left and on his own time.

“People don't even know what it was,” Cromartie said of the pictures, one of the video screen showing film of Oakland's offense and the other a picture of notes he had taken while studying film alone Monday afternoon.

“I'm just trying to give people a slight inside view of what's going on during my week,” Cromartie said.

Cromartie was fined $2,500 in August for tweeting about the bad food at training camp and theorizing that is perhaps why the Chargers haven't won a Super Bowl.

Of this tweet, Turner said, “It's a nonissue.”

But, clearly, the Chargers brass is tired of Twitter.

Asked about Cromartie's latest tweets, General Manager A.J. Smith said, “Coach Turner and (Director of Public Relations) Bill Johnston will handle all of your questions and concerns regarding anything to do with our Twitter enthusiasts.”

    Nuts 'n' Bolts

•Tackle Marcus McNeill was limited in practice with a broken pinkie. He is expected to play Monday.

•Yesterday marked the three-year anniversary of the first start by Philip Rivers. He completed 8-of-11 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in a 27-0 Monday night victory at Oakland in the 2006 season opener.
