San Diego Chargers lightning bolts will take over the Gaslamp Quarter on Friday, Nov. 27 when the Chargers host their 50th Anniversary Block Party from 5-11 PM. The largest tailgate party of the year will take place on Fifth Avenue in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, between Island and J Streets.

The team and the San Diego Hall of Champions have partnered on the event that will celebrate 50 years of Chargers football with live entertainment on two stages, interactive games, celebrity and player appearances and much more.

The highlight of the Block Party will be the introduction of the Greatest Chargers of all time as selected by vote of the team’s fans as well as members of the Chargers Hall of Fame and select football aficionados.

After honoring these current and former greats, Super Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute band, will get the crowd singing along to “Sweet Caroline.” Then the pop band Fountains of Wayne will rock the Gaslamp Quarter with favorite hits such as “Stacy’s Mom” and “Too Cool for School.” In between this musical line-up, Scooter & Lavelle will keep the energy flowing throughout the night as they spin the latest tracks.

Partiers can choose to join the crowd by the main stage or upgrade their experience in the VIP area. This VIP experience includes a chic outdoor lounge with luxurious cabanas and fancy food and beverage opportunities.
Stage 2 will be the turned into Club Chargers where the DJ stage will keep the dance floor moving. The nearby Bolt Bubble Lounge will offer guests a chance to relax among the excitement.

What a fun time! Smaller venue than I expected but the 50th anniversary team announcement/interviews was fantastic. Loved being able to show them all (past and present players) the love :D

Pictures will be up by the end of the weekend - my BFF got some reeeally good ones of all the players and some video too - I'll put a link here as soon as I get it.

    Block Party Rocks the Gaslamp

    Casey Pearce
    Posted Nov 28, 2009
The Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Weekend celebration got off to a bang Friday night as approximately 6,000 Chargers fans invaded downtown San Diego for an evening of live music, games and festivities with the Greatest Chargers.

There were cheers for Bambi, chants of “LT! LT!,” and a long, “Roooooo!” when Chargers Hall of Fame offensive tackle Russ Washington was introduced to the crowd of more than 6,000 Chargers fans who filled downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District Friday night at the 50th Anniversary Block Party.

“Pretty special evening,” Chargers Hall of Fame defensive tackle Gary “Big Hands” Johnson said.

A large area in downtown San Diego was blocked Friday to make room for food, festivities and a stage that featured live entertainment throughout the night. The highlight of the six-hour party was the introduction of the Greatest Chargers of all-time. More than 40 of the 49 living players named to the team attended, and each member of the group was greeted with loud cheers and applause as emcee Dick Enberg introduced them to the crowd.

“Our fans are incredible and the way they turned out to celebrate tonight is really special,” said tight end Antonio Gates[IMG], one of the 11 current Bolts named to the Greatest Chargers. “It was a cool night getting to see everyone and be a part of this. It’s a true honor.”

Bands rocked the stage throughout the night. Performances by Fountains of Wayne and Super Diamond highlighted the musical performances, which also included appearances from No Doubt cover band “No Duh” and the San Diego State University drum line.

The Charger Girls also performed and signed autographs for fans. Fans were treated to food and drink specials at several downtown restaurants, which were filled with a festive Chargers atmosphere.

“This is a really unique event and I’m so glad we came,” said Jessica White, a longtime season ticket holder who attended the Block Party with her husband. “It’s a great atmosphere where Chargers fans are having fun together, and getting to see all these great Chargers is really something special.”

While the players waited backstage to be introduced, they laughed and caught up with former teammates. John Hadl and Lance Alworth told stories in one corner. Fred Dean and Woodrow Lowe chatted in another. Natrone Means and Stan Humphries saw each other for the first time in a few years. Humphries and Philip Rivers[IMG] chatted about how NFL offenses have evolved over the last few years. The 17 players from the “Air Coryell” era that were named to the team gathered for a group photo.

“This is the most fun I’ve had in a long time,” former wide receiver Wes Chandler said.

And when former Head Coach Don Coryell - who Saturday was deservingly named one of 25 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame – arrived, everyone stopped and smiled.

“We don’t get to see him very often, so that’s special in its own right,” former running back Chuck Muncie said. “Coach Coryell means so much to all of us who had the privilege of playing for him.”

Each of the 11 current players named to the Greatest Chargers attended the event, along with President Dean Spanos and Head Coach Norv Turner. While the fans celebrated, the players reminisced, and it all made for a memorable evening for everyone involved.

“You’re in great company,” Rivers said. “Watching everybody tonight, it says what this game it’s all about. When it’s all said and done, it’s about the relationships with teammates. I’m sure they have stories that could last for days. That’s kind of how we feel with Gates and LT and Dielman and Hardwick. Those relationships are unique. The relationship the Chargers have with San Diego is unique. It’s fun getting to celebrate it all.
