I wondered when that fat bastard was going to get a job. ;)

A 10-year veteran, the 6-foot-1,317-pounder has recorded 161 tackles and 4.0 sacks during his career with the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. His best statistical season came in 2008 when he posted 46 tackles and a sack.

Anyone else read that as 6 foot 1,317 pounder?

    I didn't but I like your imagination. ;)

Very good signing, IMO. Better fit in a 3-4.

Maybe he didn't take to the bounty system well either.

An oft-injured guy for one who has been very durable.

    I'll take it.

Interesting little factoid in the recent UT article

Franklin joins Antonio Garay and Cam Thomas on the interior line, although if need arises, Garay can help bolster the roster elsewhere.
"Antonio Garay does have the ability to slide over and play defensive end," Smith said. "Right now, we look at it as three deep at nose tackle. Franklin and Thomas will be nose tackles, but Garay does have the versatility to move around for Coach (John) Pagano."
Garay could conceivably join Corey Liuget and Jacques Cesaire at right defensive end with Vaughn Martin and rookie Kendall Reyes entrenched on the left.

    That's rather creative

Help can come from unexpected places so I reckon we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Solid upgrade to the D-line. I was a little concerned about losing Castillo, but this makes up for it.

Even if we hadn't released Castillo yesterday, the signing of Franklin would've definitely spelled the end of his time here anyway.

I've actually suggested doing this last year. Put Cam at NT and have Garay as RDE on 3rd down. It was obvious that Liuget was lost out there last season. Some creativity was sorely needed. Too bad, we had "deer in the headlights" Manusky running the show.

If this is a sign that Pagano plans to light offenses up with aggressiveness and keep pressure on at all times then I'm all for it. Then again, I really thought Ski was going to unfurl a suffocating defense and we all know how that turned out.

the best way to evaluate your young guys is to out them side by side with a veteran. I like the idea.

They were probably finishing negotiations with Franklin up as they were calling Castillo into the GMs office.

If AJ gets canned after this season I feel he won't have a problem finding a job

AJ is not the worst GM in the NFL by any stretch. There are probably (easily) 16 GMs who do a poorer job than his of bringing in talent for their roster. The problem is that when you're the 16th best GM in the League, (or even the 10th best), you're already behind the 8 ball. Smitty isn't bad. He's just bad relative to our expectations.
