CHARGERS: In honor of supplemental draft, a look back at rare Chargers selections

The little-used NFL supplemental draft will take place on Thursday. The selection process is designed for college players who had issues that altered their eligibility.
If a team selects a player in the supplemental draft, it must sacrifice the corresponding round in the next year's draft.
There is little to no chance that the Chargers will reach out and select one of the few available prospects. But, in honor of the occasion, we'll take a little look back at the selections the Chargers have made in the supplemental draft.
    The best
NT Jamal Williams, Oklahoma State (1998)
Williams, taken in the second round of the 1998 draft and first overall, proved to be a standout selection. The three-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection anchored the Chargers defense for years, and was a major part of the franchise's playing renaissance in the 2000s. He was released following the 2009 season and finished his career with the Denver Broncos.
    The most recent
    S Paul Oliver, Georgia (2007)
Oliver was a reliable backup from 2007-10 after being selected in the fourth round of the supplemental draft (first overall selection). He signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2011, was cut in camp and re-signed with the Chargers. He is not on an NFL roster at this point.
    The import
    LT Jared Gaither, Maryland (2007)
Gaither was selected after Oliver, in fifth round of the supplemental draft, by the Baltimore Ravens. He made 28 starts for the Ravens, had an unsuccessful stint with Kansas City in 2011 and was picked up by the Chargers to fill in for the injured Marcus McNeill. He didn't allow a sack and was rewarded with a four-year contract.
    1984
The NFL's supplemental draft was expanded in 1984 to include players from the USFL or CFL.
Here's who the Chargers took then:
DE Lee Williams, QB Steve Smith and WR Clarence Collins
    The first
    WR Billy Mullins, USC (1980)
Mullins was the team's first supplemental draft pick, and was taken in the ninth round of the 1980 draft. He was traded to Chicago in 1981 for a conditional draft pick.

Everytime I see the words 'Supplemental Draft' I think of Jamal and to a lesser extent Oliver.

What do you think the Baylor receiver whose name escapes me will go for?

I'm guessing a 2nd round to the Browns.

I agree about the 2nd round, but I'm leaning Dolphins.

Another year and again no pick by the Chargers - but considering that it took a second to get the WR, I think it's a good thing

There was no need for the Chargers to get involved this.

A 2nd was too high for a team that is as loaded as the Chargers are at receiver to spend on a questionable prosepect.
