    Cromartie article - 8/7/06 - Riverside Press-Enterprise

    By JIM ALEXANDER
    The Press-Enterprise [IMG]

    SAN DIEGO - It was approaching 6 p.m., more than a half-hour after the Chargers' afternoon practice had ended. Most of Antonio Cromartie's teammates had long since left the field, headed for the next phases of the pro football player's training camp routine -- shower, dinner, meetings, sleep.

    But the Chargers' first-round draft choice was still on the field, doing footwork drills with fellow cornerback Cletis Gordon and safety Jerrell Pippens.

    Shamrock's 10,001st Ankle Biter update

    From the AP (Bernie Wilson) article about LT's sprained neck:

    Also missing from practice Friday were linebackers Shawne Merriman (hamstring) and Donna Edwards (waiting for Condon to get him big bucks from the Saints), and left tackles Roman Oben (foot) and Leander Jordan (hip).

    The San Diego Chargers have signed veteran NFL center-guard Cory Withrow to a one-year contract.

    The 6-2, 287-pound Withrow is in his seventh NFL season. He spent his first six years in the league with the Minnesota Vikings, playing in a total of 80 regular-season games with 13 starts. He has also played in four career playoff games. Last season, Withrow played in all 16 games and started seven games at center for the Vikings.

    To make room on the roster for Withrow, the Chargers waived guard Jason Murphy. Withrow will wear number 65 for the Chargers.

    I think so. Rumors have been stated on both NOLA and SD radio stations that the teams are talking. Someone on Chargers.com said the Saints offered a 4th, but AJ wants a 2nd or 3rd.

    I still can't believe Crennel didn't dish out a 4th rounder for Wilhelm :icon_shrug:

    Me either .... but ...

    IMO, AJ tendered Wilhelm at the low spot to hopefully force a team to make an offer. That would have set Wilhelm's market price. AJ could have matched, and had Wilhelm locked up long term.

    I also feel teams weren't willing to tender Wilhelm because they knew AJ had the available cap space to match. And, if they went overboard with a ridiculous offer, then AJ still would get a draft pick, without compromising future caps.

    It was a good tactic. Now, get him signed longterm.

    Do you think AJ would have matched something like 3 yrs 10.75 mil with a 4.5 mil signing bonus?

    I don't know. We could throw all kinds of figures and guess "would he/wouldn't he?"

    Was that what Leber got from Minny?

    SI Training Camp Postcard - Chargers -8/9/06

    Where's Jeffri: San Diego, where the Chargers train at team headquarters.

    Here's the Drill

    1. Donnie Edwards isn't shy about discussing his bitterness towards Chargers general manager A.J. Smith. After failing to get the Chargers to give him a contract extension this offseason, the linebacker has been searching for a trade over the last few months. He says his agent, Tom Condon, has found some willing suitors but Smith's high asking price -- a second-round pick, according to Edwards -- is killing interest. "I would've liked for things to be different here but they aren't," says Edwards, an 11-year veteran who has led San Diego in tackles in each of the last four years. "We had permission to seek a trade, we found some offers and now I'm ready to put this to rest. It's time for a change. [Smith] has made this a very difficult environment to work in and I'm ready to just go some place where I'm appreciated."

    ...

    [IMG]

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I almost cried when I read the mental abuse that Edwards has to toil under. Really. Tears nearly flooded my cheeks. Honest. It pains me to see him in such a bitter, repressive work environment. Tears, I tell you. Tears.
    Edwards brought this crap on himself by asking for a new contract after only the first year of his current one was done, and using the name of the late John Butler to claim that he was 'owed' it.
    Covering Bolt Receivers a Tall Order
    By P.S. Hamilton
    Rumor has it some NBA recruiters are scouting Charger’s training camp. It’s not true, but wide receivers Vincent
    Jackson, Kassim Osgood and Malcom Floyd, all 6’ 5” tall, have pulled down enough jump balls over the last few weeks to deserve a look. Judging by the acrobatics seen throughout camp, the Charger’s receiver corps is rebounding. It appears that on opening day the Bolts will field the most physically intimidating group of receivers in the NFL. No other team has more than one receiver over 6’ 5”. The Chargers have three.
    The most diminutive receiver on the squad is Eric Parker at 6’ 0”, while Keenan McCardell and Greg Camarillo are both 6’ 1”. They don’t need to worry about job security, though -- quick and elusive will always be in demand. But since 2003, there has been a definite trend toward larger receivers in the NFL.
