The San Diego Chargers will hold a block party in downtown's Gaslamp Quarter today to celebrate the football team's 50th anniversary.

The event, touted as the largest tailgate party of the year, will include live entertainment on two stages, interactive games and celebrity and player appearances, according to the event's organizers. Among the bands scheduled to perform are Super Diamond, Fountains of Wayne and DJs Scooter and Lavelle.

There will be a ``Fan Fest'' zone, where participants can put their athletic skills to the test with a variety of interactive games.

Officials will also introduce the ``Greatest Chargers'' of all time as selected by a vote of the team's fans and members of the Chargers Hall of Fame and football aficionados.

The block party, which is being put on by the Chargers and the San Diego Hall of Champions, runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fifth Avenue, between Island and J streets. Tickets are $35.

The Chargers began as a charter team of the American Football League in 1960, before moving to San Diego in 1961.
