    Mixing it up

Count safety Eric Weddle[IMG] among those who loved the wrinkles Chargers Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera threw at the Chiefs last week, particularly the ones that involved the safety blitz.
“Keep them coming,” Weddle said through a smile. “We’ve just got to keep getting there.”
Defensive backs, specifically Weddle and Gregory, logged two of the Chargers’ five sacks last week, but Rivera believes mixing things up benefitted the rushers up front as well.
“In some cases it creates a little more one-on-one,” Rivera said. “If (the offense) isn’t sure where your pressure is coming from, they may turn the protection the wrong direction or a guy that may be assigned to one guy, if that guy doesn’t come he’s leaving without chipping. It creates a lot more one-on-one matchups.”

    Fullback time

Jacob Hester[IMG] is listed as the team’s starting fullback, but in recent weeks he’s split time with Mike Tolbert[IMG] at the position. Turner said that particularly last week he used the rotation to help Hester after he missed two practices with the flu, but Turner plans to continue to use both players regularly.
“We took a little bit of pressure off (Hester) playing Michael a little more last week but I see them splitting time,” Turner said. I think it’s a good setup for both of them. I think it helps both of them in terms of not getting beat up and not having the wear and tear of playing that position (full time).”
