its actually from Chargers.com... I was thinking ESPN when I wrote the title...

Norv and AJ love this English guy... I kinda like him a bit more after reading this.... Especially where he notes that they would like Merriman, Phillips and English on the field at the same time...

    Chargers bolster pass rush

The Chargers used their first-round pick in Saturday’s NFL Draft on Northern Illinois linebacker Larry English, who had 31.5 sacks is college.

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith went into this weekend hoping give a boost to a pass defense that finished 31st in the NFL in 2008, and he believes Northern Illinois outside linebacker Larry English (6-2, 255) can do just that.

“We need to bring pressure,” Smith said. “This is a guy that can bring the heat. (He’s) physical, nasty, great presence. We’re going to give him to Coach (Ron) Rivera and turn him loose.”

English, whom the Chargers selected with the 16th overall pick Saturday, recorded a school-record 31.5 sacks and 63 tackles for loss while at Northern Illinois. He joins an already talented linebacker group that includes Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips, but Head Coach Norv Turner believes you can never have enough pass rushers, particularly with the way opponents have attacked the Chargers in recent years.

“We’ve had the most passes thrown against us of any team in the last five years,” Turner said. “I don’t care who you are, you can only cover so long. If you can’t pressure the quarterback in this league, you’re going to struggle. Obviously getting Shawne Merriman back will help us greatly there, but adding a rusher we thought would certainly help us.”

With 20 of 22 starters from last year’s team set to return, the Chargers were in position to draft a player who could come in and fill a role while they grow. That’s what they believe they found in English.

“If a guy comes in and is an outstanding pass rusher, you can get his hand in the ground or let him rush the quarterback from a two-point stance,” Turner said. “If he comes in here and plays 500 or 600 snaps in our nickel packages and can be productive, that would be a great plus for us.”

Turner said he and his defensive staff will likely find ways to get Merriman, Phillips and English on the field at the same time, citing previous situations in which the Chargers played four outside linebackers at once. English also provides value in the kicking game.

“The fact that Larry plays linebacker, it’s going to help us on special teams,” Turner said. “He’s a guy that will probably be on three or four special teams. He’ll be a guy that you’d be able to get ready to play in your nickel packages.”

In addition to his on-field prowess, English was a two-time recipient of the Vern Smith Leadership Award recipient given to the Mid-American Conference's top player. The Chargers believe they’re getting a high-character player who will be an asset in the locker room.

“The guy has no flags on him; no trouble,” Chargers Director of Player Personnel Jimmy Raye said. “He’s a character guy, which we look for in all of our players. A.J. stresses that through and through, ‘Make sure the guy doesn’t have any off-field issues.’ The guy is perfectly clean."

same thing every year, I hear the name, am I like WTF? and then the more I read the more I like the choice. Still wish we got Oher though. God can you imagine Oher and McNeill as bookends?

But I said before, we sucked on defense and with Mcneil, Hardwick, Gates, and LT hurt for most the season we had one of the top offenses in the league. So maybe they are right focus on defense and get after the QB create turnovers and control the clock.

I'll admit it...I was ready B-slap AJ when they made this pick. I had heard of English, but in name only. Having looked at some stats & opinions, there's nothing wrong with English. Haven't read one bad thing about him.

And the fact that others like Rey Maualuga & Everette Brown fell into the 2nd round says a lot.

i think, if we had had a second rounder which we could've used to get a phil loadholt or a ron brace or someone like that, this would've been a marvellous pick.

As it stands I understand why the pick was made, I understand the reasons and I agree with them, but I would've preferred Oher

I feel like we can still improve the OL via FA. Nothing to panic about. There's still veterans out there like Tauscher and Runyan who still have some left in the tank.

Ask for our D, it will looke LEGENDARY if English lives up to expectations.

    It'll be:

RE: English (all he has to do is put on some weight, he has the burst)
    NT:Jamal
    LE: Luis

    ROLB: Shawne
    ILB: Coop
    ILB: Kevin B.
    LOLB: Shaun

    CB: Jammer
    CB: Cromartie

    SS: Weddle
    FS: Oliver

    What's the problem?

That pretty much sums up my feelings about the English pick. I have no real problems with us addressing our pass rush issue, but I would have preferred we addressed our Offensive or Defensive Line first.

I would have really liked to have gotten Tyson Jackson, but man did he go quick...

I don't think English can be big enough to be a DE that takes on blockers and AJ in the interview suggests that he's an OLB. So that won't happen and we're stuck now with Ryon Bingham.

Oh and flip-flop Oliver and Weddle positions. thank you

I like how everyone is quick to judge. Everyone saying Oher, or maluaga sp? etc, becuase they did a feel good story on Oher, and some other big names. Advertising sure does work...SUCKAS!

He is a Bolt now :bolt:, so he has my support, until he busts...

Your probably right. I didn't hear the Michael Oher story until about an hour before the draft, and I didn't think much of him at all.

I was pissed when English's name was called, but its starting to make more and more sense. Still I'd have preferred to trade back and get a 2nd rounder.
