The Chargers announced Tuesday that four assistant coaches from the 2008 squad will not return to the team next season.

Secondary coach Bill Bradley and tight end coach Clancy Barone, both of whom just completed their second seasons with the Bolts, were released from their contracts.

In addition, the contracts for offensive line coach Jack Henry and assistant secondary/quality control coach Kevin Ross are due to expire in February and both men will not return in 2009.

Henry, a veteran of 15 NFL seasons, joined the Chargers in 2006 and was also with the club in 1996. Ross played cornerback for the Bolts in 1996 and worked with Chargers defensive backs in 2007 and ’08.

“We appreciate the contributions and hard work of these four men and wish them only the best in their future endeavors,” Head Coach Norv Turner said.

So they're firing the guy who had to take care of the NFL's second worst secondary - I would too.

Bradley got alot of the credit for turning around the secondary last year and Henry has gotten credit for 2006 and 2007.

    Interesting

purging the remnants of the Cottrell regime.

Could signal an influx of some Rivera changes to the Philly/Chicago style 4-3.

or could signal that Rivera may be leaving too.

Hopefully the former rather than the latter.

The TE coach got the boot?

I wonder if they have someone withing in the wings or what. The TEs did not have a bad year other than Gates being hobbled... IMO.

smart move to be honest, i mean our line was weak this year (in relation to previous year, inability to command the running game, but sheer DOMINANCE on the pass), our secondary was sh*t too

I think Norv will have a hard time attracting any great coaches, seeing how he's basically a lame duck himself. Unless there have been back room discussion of an extension. :icon_eek:

Norv accepted the OC position here in 2001 because he was hoping Riley would get fired and he would be offered a HC position. Butler knew better, so Norv left angry after Riley was fired.

History repeats itself again... We actually might get another team's DC or OC as they'll have the same agenda on mind.

There's also another factor to keep in mind. It appears that our good coaches seem to move on to a better job after a few years, especially if Rivera gets a HC job, so a coach may join on as a stepping stone to a better job. Have a few good years here and get a HC offer.

That's the only positive to losing coaches to better positions is that better coaches would be more willing to join on for the opportunity to get a better job in the future.

Do you have any articles or anything to back that up? Or are you once again floating your opinions and speculation as facts?

WOW. You claim to be a long time Chargers fan and you didn't know this?

Norv was our OC is 2001 as Riley was our HC. Do you know that much?

Riley was fired at the end of the season and Norv was not offered a HC position. His closing words before leaving the franchise were "this team is much further from a playoff team than you think."

You didn't know any of this?

It was posted in the Union Tribune seven years ago. You look it up.

You claimed that Norv accepted the OC position hoping Riley would be fired. Was that in the article, or is that your speculation? But even though you don't know that for a fact, you probably aren't far off. I would imagine that pretty much every guy hired anywhere in the NFL is hoping the guy above him might disappear at some point and they would get promoted.

You claimed Butler knew better. Again, was that in the article, or more of your conjecture? You don't know why Norv wasn't hired. I'm guessing (see I don't pretend to know) that Butler and A.J. both liked Norv as evidenced by the fact that they hired his as OC in the first place, and he was later brought back as a head coach. Perhaps they like Norv, but felt Marty was the better choice at that point for any number of reasons.

You have a habit of throwing **** around like you were in the room and heard everything. In fact, you don't know dick, and your statements are merely your opinion and/or speculation. As for Turner's statement, I don't live in San Diego and don't read the Union daily. I'd have to read the whole article to understand the context in which it was said.
