The San Diego Chargers made it official, announcing that they've signed strong safety Tyrone Carter and cut defensive end Alfonso Boone.

Boone played in the first three games this season, but was inactive for last week’s game versus Arizona.

National Football Post reported Tuesday that Carter had signed with the Chargers after passing his physical.

Carter started 12 games last year for the Pittsburgh Steelers in place of injured Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu. He intercepted a pair of passes against Denver last season, returning one 48 yards for a touchdown, to earn AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Carter also returned an interception for a touchdown in 2008 and had one of his best seasons in 2003 with the New York Jets, starting 10 games and recording 88 tackles and two interceptions.

He started his career in 2000 with the Minnesota Vikings and was signed by the Washington Redskins this August but released the week before the regular season.
